Today in 1902, the Teddy Bear became popular, due to Teddy Roosevelt and a Washington Star newspaper cartoon depicting the President with a bear....

Now that is something to celebrate as it's brought pure joy to so many kids and to the kid in so many adults.

Sometimes you'll be walking down a street and a little kid will pass with his mom holding his hand and with his free hand holding his Teddy Bear - pure joy.

On this day in 1928, Mickey Mouse was officially presented to the public in the short, Steamboat Willie. So today is also his 90th birthday.

Today's date in 1978 Jim Jones, a U.S. pastor, led 914 of his followers to their deaths at Jonestown, Guyana, by drinking a cyanide-laced fruit drink. Cult members who refused to swallow the drink were shot.

Sundance Channel is presenting a documentary on this tonight from 6 PM to 10 PM, CST. Hard to believe this was 40 years ago.

This train of thought passes many sidings. We had the 50th anniversary luncheon of our grade school graduation in September: it dawned on me at the time that 50 years prior to that date would put us in the final months of the First World War.

Gotta wonder if 13 year olds today see us as ancient as we saw 63 year olds when we were in 8th grade.

When I was a small boy, one of our school exercises was to write about how old we would be in the year 2000. I remember working out that I would be 52/53, an age I couldn't comprehend. Most of us thought that we would never get there, such was the sense of pessimism at the height of the cold war that even children didn't believe that the world would survive long enough to see the 21st century.

Thursday Nov. 21, 1963.
San Antonio.
I skipped school and with my school bus pass
headed downtown to see the President &
Mrs. Kennedy.

Since we only had b&w tv, I was surprized to
see that Mr. Kennedy's hair was a reddish brown and Mrs. Kennedy was lovelier in
person.
Such were the thoughts of a young ki

Below, they are turning left on St. Mary's St.
and heading to the new school named in
his honor.

Looking at the photo above, I'm amazed at the
lack of security to protect our President. I was
standing under that beautiful Hertzburg clock
on the right.

This video taken in San Antonio, shows people
running up to him and touching him. Amazing!

Next day @ lunch time (12:30 cst)
The bell rang to go back to class.
This was the first time I was to see
so many adults in tears at the same
time. The teacher dismissed us from
school for the rest of the day.
I ran home, hoping that the President
would be fine.
Walter Cronkite told us of the results.
I cried along with him.
My loss of innocence and youth was forever changed.

Who shot J.R. ? On this day in 1980, millions of people around the world tuned in to find out.

What a sad world we lived in when TV show cliffhangers were the only thrills we got.

Thompson's book, "Six Seconds in Dallas" came out in ~1966. I didn't read it until 1970 & never questioned the official version until then. It along with Mark Lane's book opened my eyes.
