While certainly famous, this is, IMO, one of the US' and UK's finest moment that is fading a bit from, at least, popular knowledge. Everything can be deconstructed to self interest and snark - and there are no shortage of people willing to do so especially when it comes to US history - but, to me, what the US and UK did in The Berlin Airlift was both generous of spirit and impressive in logistic and technology in an awe-inspiring way.

I know what you mean about events that were once common knowledge, and now fading in the mists of time.

I served with an officer who was not aware of the Falklands war...

I am amazed at the lack of knowledge of basic history in the general population. There's a show on some travel cable channel my girlfriend watches - which I'll walk in and out of - where they ask people basic questions and the things they don't know are amazing. Some can't place the decade in which WWII took place or have any general knowledge of the Roman Empire - as recent examples.

On August 19th, 1942, nearly five thousand Canadian troops, nearly 1,000 Royal Marines and 50 US Rangers landed at and near Dieppe, France. The official record shows it to be a trial run of sorts in preparation for the eventual D-Day landings, but recent research suggests Dieppe was chosen in part because of the presence of German crypto equipment, Enigma, to be captured. Hence, the strong RM commando presence.

Of the over 4,900 Canadians, an incredible 905 were killed in action, over 1,900 taken prisoner, and thus more than 50% of the force did not make it back to England. All in just over 6 and a half hours.

This was the first occasion of American troops landing in occupied Europe, and one officer was killed in action. The Royal Marines lost several dozen men, one Royal Navy destroyer was sunk, and the RAF and RCAF lost dozens of aircraft.

Lord Mountbatten was criticised for his leadership and planning, but recent scholarship is indicating that he was following the orders from on high. That is, the direct assault on Dieppe proper was a requirement, along with the minimal bombardment to avoid civilian casualties. The Canadian government, having refused to participate in North Africa or the Asian theatre in any strength, was nevertheless anxious to join the fight, and fought long and hard to be the main force.

It did not help that the date was changed, thus giving time for the planned event to become known as troops talked.

All of which is to say, political pressure and bad timing played a huge part in the debacle.

1901 The birth, in Blackpool, of Sir William Lyons, known as 'Mr. Jaguar'. He was, with fellow motorcycle enthusiast William Walmsley, the co-founder in 1922 of the Swallow Sidecar Company, which became Jaguar Cars Limited after the war. The first 'Jaguar' model, under the company name of SS Cars Ltd. was offered in 1935, but after World War II Lyons changed the company name to Jaguar to avoid the unfortunate connotations of SS Cars Ltd. with the Nazi 'SS'.

1962 The Beatles started their first recording session at EMI's Abbey Road Studios, London, with their producer, George Martin.

And now he has a river, a parkway and a park named after him. Was just recently on the banks of the Hudson river - it is an impressive body of water.

And of course the Hudson Strait in the Canadian Arctic and, of course, the site of the mutiny that cost him his life, and that of his teenaged son and others - Hudson Bay, aka Hudson's Bay, the second largest bay in the world.

From which the Hudson's Bay Company would take its name. Ironic, as Hudson was sailing on behalf of the Dutch East India Company.

And now I will think of him fondly when we take out our Hudson Bay blankets this fall. Also, my girlfriend owns this vintage Hudson Bay coat (the one item of clothing she has received more random compliment on than anything else she owns):

How frustrating the internet can be at times. I've been trying to find out if that other Hudson emigree, Joseph Hudson, was a descendant of Henry, but to no avail.

Joseph Hudson was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and immigrated with his family to Hamilton, Canada when he was nine; by the age of fourteen he and members of his family were residing in Michigan. His brother William moved to Buffalo, New York in 1896, to operate a branch of the Hudson's store until his death in 1928.

While Hudson began his career in merchandising with family members and other outside partners, he founded what would provide the basis for Hudson's Department Stores in 1881 inside a shop at the Detroit Opera House. Hudson at first focused on men' and boy's wear, and succeeded through set low prices and a return policy that favored the customer. As business volume grew, Hudson added sale professionals and additional lines of goods, including women's clothing and housewares. Hudson incorporated his venture in 1891 as the J. L. Hudson Company.

In addition with providing the seed capital for Hudson Motor Car Company, J.L. Hudson was also involved the American Vapor Stove Company, Dime Savings Bank, American Exchange National Bank, the Detroit City Gas Company, and the Third National Bank of Detroit. When the Third National Bank collapsed in the financial panic of 1893, Hudson felt personally liable for the failure and paid from his personal accounts an amount equal to the balances of record held by each account holder. The move cost Hudson $265,000, however the goodwill that it showed also paid Hudson dividends in the form of increasing market share for his businesses. Hudson was also active in civic causes in the greater Detroit area.

My much belated thanks to Mr. Hudson. His department store in Detroit (J.L. Hudson's) was where my little brother and I went to see Santa Claus, just like in "A Christmas Story".
