On this date in 1937, a notorious act of Imperial Japanese provocation against the US, as the US Navy gunboat Panay is bombed and sunk while anchored off the coast of Nanking, China. The Panay incident further inflamed tensions between Japan and the US, especially in view of building outrage among the American public over Japanese militarism in the Far East. The Panay incident was soon overshadowed by the Rape of Nanking, which generated nationwide American boycotts of Japanese goods and extensive war-relief efforts on behalf of the embattled Chinese people.

Rather topical, on this day in 1987, U.S. secretary of state, George Shultz, calls on European allies to increase NATO defence spending.

On this day in 1913, the ' Mona Lisa' was recovered in Florence, 2 years after having been stolen from the Louvre. ......I've seen the thing a few times & it's just a dull, uninteresting little painting, no idea why everyone gets so excited by it.

On this day in 1970, this became numero uno in the pop charts.

Today in 1915, the first all metal airplane was tested, over Dessau, Germany - the Junkers J1.

Today in 1917, a priest called Flanagan founded the famous home known as Boys Town, which was memorialized by Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracy in the 1938 movie of the same name

1901: Marconi receives the first transatlantic radio signal. 1915: Frank Sinatra is born.
1896 Marconi gave the first public demonstration of radio at Toynbee Hall, London. On the same day, in 1901, Marconi carried out the first transatlantic radio transmission from Poldhu, Cornwall, to St John’s, Newfoundland, a distance of 1800 miles.
Re-Frank Sinatra.

That signal wasn't very entertaining -- the Morse code letter "S," three dots repeated.

The state of radio programming nearly a century and a quarter later does not suggest an overall improvement.
No, the single letter S isn't very entertaining. But when one gets the dot, dot, dot, dash, dash, dash, dot, dot, dot that is most entertaining. Especially entertaining when most of our radio communication is done with speech and not morse code.

When Morse Code is used, that means the enemy is right on top of the Special Forces team leader, and he doesn't have enough separation from the enemy to even whisper into the radio that he needs an extraction. When they whisper things are really bad; using Morse Code is even worse.

Rescue pilots hate it when they whisper, and we really hate it when they use Morse Code.

On this day in 1621, the first export of American furs leaves the colonies for England abord the ship,Fortune. The ship was captured by the French before reaching it's destination & the cargo confiscated.

On this day in 2003, Saddam Hussein, was captured.

On this day in 1642, the Dutch navigator, Abel Tasman, 'discovered' what is now known as New Zealand.

On this day in 1925, Dick Van Dyke, was born.
Many happy returns, Dick. Don't miss his "remarkable appearance " in the new 'Mary Poppins returns.'
