Tie clip / tie bar

Received this clip yesterday:

Looks vintage but it`s a new one for just 10 Euro including shipping.


Another clip I bought before but unfortunately lost it on the first day out.

Would buy it again but wouldn`t wear it again.

Both are pretty sharp. Sorry you lost the second one!

I have quite a few clips but I am always worried bout using them on my vintage ties as the toothy types could do a number on silk and rayon. :eusa_doh: Maybe I have just had a few bad experiences everyone else has avoided though. [huh] :eusa_doh:

No, I think that you're right. I just bought a toothless clip today (UCLA frat, 1956), and even without the teeth, a light impression was left on my silk, Javanese Scabards tie (the one that I showed at the QM tie seminar). Fortunately, the impression will fade, but if the tiebar had been the toothy type...:eusa_doh:

I only have 3 tie bars. They look art deco-ish but are just the usual slide on type. I am a little afraid to damage my ties.
My question is: Are short Tie bars for very slim ties?`Or do you wear em higher on the tie? Or something else?

i have a tie bar that I used ages ago and i liked how it looked. Some time earlier this year I had come across it and wanted to use it but found that the current dress shirts I have are designed with a collar spread the won't allow me to use the bar. Need some vintage style dress shirts that will support a tie bar in the future.

I think you are writing about a collar bar. You are right. They don't work with mordern cutaway collars

Yep. It is a job and a half finding otr dress shirts that work with collar bars.
I believe Van Heusen point collars work.

Yup you are absolutely right. I read Tie Bars and clips but was thinking collar bar!

So what about the short tie bars? is it wrong if a tie bar only goes half of the tie? There are art deco elements on it and I think they look like the should be in the center. But I can'tz imagine it to be from the sixties (and for skinny ties).

It depends on the tie, and how you position the tie bar (or clip). If you're wearing a thinner tie, and the bar goes straight across (traditional), the latter should cover most of the necktie. If you wear it slanted and pointing down, in latter-50's style (e.g. Ralph Meeker as Mickey Spillane in Kiss Me Deadly, 1955), then the tie bar could theorectically be shorter. For wider ties, the tie clip or bar should go at least two-thirds across the front blade of the necktie (not slanted).
