Tie Clip Positioning

When wearing a tie clip, at what spot should it be clipped? High on the tie?, Midway? Lower?
I am currently watching LA Confidential, and Kevin Spacey has his clip closer to the bottom. Its length is short and goes over half the tie. Russell Crowe has a full length clip and wears his higher up. About 3-4 inches below the knot, but definately above the midway point.
I tend to wear my clip (half length clip) higher up, but if I wear a tie pin, I try to stick it dead center. Any ideas on whats appropriate?

Wondering this too

I only have two clips and one pin, but I find myself trying different positions to find what looks best. Is there a correct spot for it?

Try wearing it about one-third down, but at an angle- it'll make you look like Cary Grant.
Russel Crowe's style in L.A. Confidential looks more military to me- like something they teach in Officer Candidate School- but that fits his character's overall look. Even his watch looks like a sub-dial military model from WWII.

I currently wear a tie clip that looks like a '40 Ford.
Good conversation starter.

I've been wearing tie clips with vintage ties for over twenty years and I've experimented with every position and tie. With a SB 2 button jacket the clip should be just about even with the breast pocket (but never above it) but not to interefere with the design of the tie. That way when the jacket is buttoned you can see the clip. People notice this right away: 'Oh what a nice tie clip.' Swing era ties are sometimes difficult to mate with a clip as the nouveau design is intersected by the clip. If you're definitely going to leave your jacket open, move the clip to a position that doesn't interfere with the design yet is still not too low or too high. I've had more than a few ties that wouldn't go with a clip and as I hate wearing ties without a clip I got rid of them. High-button DB and 3button SB's are even more difficult. It's nearly impossible to have the jacket buttoned and the tie clip showing. In these cases, just clip at at the same position you would as if you had a 2b SB. That way when you do open your jacket, the composition is correct. In a nutshell, have the clip showing with a buttoned jacket as long is is not above the breast pocket.

Do go out and buy a lot of tie clips. (and cufflinks) They're cheap, and as your vintage wardrobe grows you're going to learn that certain tie clips go with certain ties. I'm fond of clips with chess pieces on them, and while they go with my 60s ties they do not go with my 40s ties. It's all about the accessories: tie, pocket square, cufflinks, and clip.

Senator Jack
