Thoughts on rust contrast stitching?

Hey all,

I'm speccing a new jacket in black cxl fqhh with bright brass, anyone have an opinion on rust colored stitching with black? My basis here is to highlight some of the brown that will eventually fade and wear through.

Off the top of my head on some rust and black color combos, the color of a doberman or rottweiler, herman miller's eames lounge chairs.

The jacket pattern would be a premier highwayman style.

Black and Brown combos get mixed reviews around here.
I personally prefer tonal stitching that matches the leather. Some can really pull off the contrast look,and some models look really great that way. But I think the furthest I could go would be olive with brown. Gold might be nice to echo the brass, but it could also end up looking like a denim jacket.

I'm normally not a fan of contrasting stitching, but on this jacket the rust stitching looks good. If you like it, go for it.

I had this same concern, but as long as theres no double or triple seam stitches, it could avoid that denim jacket look. Carrie says rust is the closest thread color they have to this.

I like it, but I'm a sucker for brown thread on black. I have a black board racer with brown stitching but its a darker brown, so it's more subdued. I can post a pic of it tomorrow if that would be helpful for comparison, but I think that rust color looks great.

@SpeedRcrX had a sensational jacket made with rust stitching (I think) some years back. Perhaps a quick search might uncover some of those pics. from memory, it looked great. Unique & not for everyone, but I thought it worked very well.

From fashion point of view rust-black would definitely be an eyecatcher and this combination definitely matches. If you like this combination and if you're looking for something special, go for it. If you are more conservative I would choose black thread colour. I personally would go for the contrast stitching version.

Thank you for the link. It appears rust might be a little to red for me, also the thread gauge looks almost too bold. Hmmm you might’ve convinced me to stay with black

The only combo of contrast stitching I don’t like is white thread on a dark colored leather. This combo of rust and black is great. Reminds me of how true vintage black jackets often have sun faded brown stitching. Would look awesome on a PHWM.

Contrasting thread dramatically brings out the quality of the stitching. Something to keep in mind depending on the maker imho.

Yeah I think the thread gauge and the stitch count might be too high for this bold a color, personally for me now that I've looked at it

I would go for something more subtle, like brown or khaki/tan thread over the rust. That rust looks too red IMO.

Only other thing to consider is; the higher the contrast between the leather colour & stitching, the closer to ‘perfect’ the stitching needs to be. Any slight deviation, or misalignment in the stitching, the more obvious it becomes.

Probably look nice as long as the stitching is neat and close to the edges of the panel, the further away from the edge the less attractive a contrast stitch to me.
Your photos above is what i call close to the edge stitching and where it looks good.
