Thoughts from the pros regarding this Fine Creek would be appreciated

Hi all, I'm thinking about buying this jacket but am intimidated by the price being that I have so little experience. In the past I bought something I should have sought advice on and don't want to make the same mistake twice. The mistake I made isn't my Maxwell though this jacket would replace the Maxwell.

This seems to be the closest I've come to a good fit in months of looking and Fine Creek is obviously a good maker, though I'm partial to the British stuff, (minus Simmons Bilt I've recently learned) and Thedi. My concerns are: is it genuine and is it a good price given the condition, which seems to me to be pretty good. My concerns are heightened because the shoulders are only 17" and I think I'm an 18" at least. I've read some people here feel there is room to play with measurements. If it doesn't fit I'm going to have to move it on and don't want to take a bath because I paid too much. Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated and put to good use. Thank you!

Expensive. Some say shoulder width doesn't matter. It does. I know as a 23.5 pit to pit, that anything less that 18.5 in shoulders won't allow me to move properly. I have never set foot inside a gym and I have a slim to medium build.

Do you know your key measurements based on a great fitting jacket you already own? That's the best way to work this out.

I would be surprised if this jacket actually is 17 inches at size 40 but I am not really a "pro".

Had a couple fine creeks and they definitely are narrow in the shoulders. The James I had was actually too tight in arm circumference. Great for slender guys, not a good fit in general for meat heads.

I too believe that shoulder width is an important measurement and I think this would be especially true in a trim fitting jacket like the FC James.
From the photos of the jacket it looks to be in almost new condition and the price is just about half of what a new one would run you from Self Edge. Hopefully someone here who owns this jacket can chip in with some more practical advice regarding fit.

always, always, always ask for photo of the measurements. I've learned the hard way. Then compare to other jacket you have that you know fits you. That's basically the easiest way. Some variables, i.e. don't compare leather measurement with cloth/denim. Different types of leather may give more, etc. But the basics will give higher degree chance of success

Thank you folks. I’m 5’8” about 175. I’m pretty slim since I’ve been working on my house. I do have a jacket I like the fit of and it measures 18” in the shoulders. A lower price seems to be something I should shoot for if I were to risk it.

The seller says it fits like a 36-38 and that’s generally what I read from people about FC sizing. I’m pretty close to your height/weight (in fact slightly lighter) and I think I’d need a size up. At the very least with that style I’d want to be able to wear a light sweater underneath.

People can ask whatever they want. It’s figuring out what enough people will pay that’s the trick. You’re right though. I could get a custom Aero for a bit more $ and a lot more time. That’s something to think about.

Mich486 could you tell me your P2P and sleeve. I’m a 20” P2P and 25” sleeve. It doesn’t seem very common.

The seller gives the size as a 40, but I would be leery of that. Ask for a p2p measurement.

Jackets are measured p2p, but people are measured all the way around the chest to get the actual circumference of the chest. Less room for error.

I need 21”/21.5” p2p at least to be comfortable.

My $.02 of advice:

Use this as a guide, but don’t trust retailer measurements in general. I have numerous examples where there is a 1-2” difference in sleeve or P2P in a size 30-40.

I'm 5'9, 170 lbs. with a 40-inch chest and this jacket would be too small for me. I have a Fine Creek in size 42 (Type 1) and it fits me great. I need 21 - 22 p2p and would think the same for you. Fine Creek makes a beautiful jacket that shows wear very quickly.

Yeah, but the splendid setting of the shoulders overcomes the exterior event space.

while I think shoulder width in important to get a certain look , but if the jacket fit you around the chest, then it should fit your shoulder (unless you have very weird proportion or probably over developing your shoulder muscle), normal joes should not need to worry much about shoulder width since shoulder is hard to measure as it is a ball, if you have shorter shoulder seam the sleeve will look rounder on your shoulder, wider shoulder then the sleeve will look squarer, very rare you find a jacket that you can zip up on the body and cant fit your shoulder.

The shoulders are quite narrow which makes the fit tricky, this at least applies for my custom Leon the Nostar. If you like the "dramatic" ageing/teacore effect, FCL is the right brand for you. Their 2mm thick HH (it does not feel heavier than FW's Shinki) is not my favorite leather. I definitely prefer FW Shinki (also FW's overall construction and thicker liner) and also much less expensive Shinki used by Greg Fields but that's my personal opinion.

@jadub , seriously, forget the excessive measuring and precise numbers. If the jacket is in your size, it'll fit you for SURE. Size number, which should be based on armpit to armpit width is all that matters. Shoulder width doesn't exist. It's a meaningless number.
Ask for P2P width. If it's what you wear, you're good.

Armhole and the way it is positioned/rotated/etc. determines how a jacket will feel around your shoulders but the width between the two sleeves means nothing.
Proof in point - leather vests.

That said, FC jackets are narrow on top and it affects the look of the jacket, as @navetsea pointed out, but all that'll happen is you'll pull the sleeves a bit higher.

In short, only armpit/chest width matters.

I am 6'2" and 180lb with wide shoulders, i easily fit in jackets with 18" shoulders.
If you like that jacket get it, it will most likely be ok.
