My 110% all time, singing and dancing, with sugar on top, favorite "lost" star of the Golden Era is Sonia Darrin. Darrin played "Agnes Lowzier" in the Big Sleep.

And, oh! That immortal line:

"What do you think those are, grapefruit?"

Agnes is my absolute favorite character in The Big Sleep, and she has the best lines. I cannot believe she doesn't even get a credit in the movie. I looked Ms. Darrin up on the internet a while ago and found an interesting page about her. Nice to know she's still with us!

Also very happy to see some other Elisha Cook, Jr. fans. He is brilliant, and I'll go out of my way to check out a movie if I know he's going to be in it.

Yes, I remember breaking out in a sweat when I saw that blog. But is she still around? I tried to look her up to see if I could meet her when I was in New York last month.

She is incredibly attractive and sultry in that movie.

You missed The Dark Corner, a great film where he (sort of) reprises his Waldo Lyedecker character from Laura.
While I loved the flick, I didn't want to post his entire filmography.[huh]

I've used one of his lines often: "How I detest the dawn; the grass looks as if it's been left out all night."
Thank you, I will certainly find an occasion to use this gem. ;)

One of my favorites (and I'm sure yours too, even if you don't know his name) was Elisha Cook, Jr. I was actually planning to look him up and send him a fan letter back in 1995, when I heard he died.

Life's too full of that kind of ironic crap.

Elisha Cook has a great face. I know his name, and I know that face, but can't always put the name and the face together in the opening credits. Yet when he pops up on screen, he elicits an affectionate, "Oh, look! It's THAT guy!!"

So many forgotten actors and actresses...

Lee Tracy"( 1898-1968) "was a fine example of racy and race-paced style of pre-code Hollywood".

In this 1934 photo Maxie Rosonbloom, the world's light heavyweight champion turned actor, prepares to punch somebody, while Lee Tracy looks on. :)

I've actually considered doing a pictorial on him as he was quite the well dressed dude, even while saddled with a somewhat chunky physique.

ALDO Ray

Ray's husky frame, thick neck and raspy voice made him perfect for playing tough sexy roles. In his first film as Aldo Ray, he starred with Judy Holliday in 1952’s The Marrying Kind, directed by film legend George Cukor. Cukor famously suggested that Ray go to ballet school because he walked too much like a football player. That same year, Ray appeared in Pat and Mike, starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn in the seventh of their nine films together, and again directed by Cukor.

His best known work of the 1960’s, however, was his portrayal of Sergeant Muldoon, alongside John Wayne, in The Green Berets.

Nevertheless, Hollywood’s appetite for Ray’s machismo waned in the 1970’s. He was typically cast as gruff and gravelly rednecks. Perhaps overly eager for work, Aldo even appeared in a pornographic movie, Sweet Savage, in a non-sexual role. This decline continued in the 1980’s. Aldo’s SAG membership was revoked in the 1980s when it was discovered he was acting in non-union productions. His last film was the campy Shock Em Dead in which he appeared with Traci Lords and Troy Donahue. :(

Walter Brennan, Alan Hale Sr., Fred McHugh, Guinn (Big Boy) Williams, Victor Jory, Gloria Grahame, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Chill Wills, Thelma Ritter, Jane Darwell, Beulah Bondi, Charles Coburn, S.Z. (cuddles) Sakall, Barry Fitzgerald, Hattie McDaniel, Sydney Greenstreet, Lee J. Cobb, Karl Malden, Lionel Barrymore, Peter Ustinov, Spring Byington, Brock Peters, Woody Strode, Dame Mae Whitty, Flora Robson, Mae Robson and Nigel Bruce.

I listed Nigel Bruce from Sherlock Holmes fame but forgot to include Henry Daniell, Gale Sondergard, and Rondo Hatton. I thought all three of these actors were marvelous.
