Thom Browne-Say It Ain't So!

So what's America's next pet rock? No wait, the pet rock was stupid and successful.

Actually, Monsieur Browne can't complain. He had a good run for a huckster, and I'm sure he's got millions stashed away all from doing nothing effectively.

That really nailed it. However, the Pet Rock is still being produced and was meant to be a funny purchase. This guy was serious. :eusa_doh:

Who's calling?

See, I think youre wrong. We're not his market. I dont think he has any interest in we middle-aged men of the FL. He's leaving us to the other Brooks Bros lines as well as RalphLauren or JPress.
The whole point of BB contracting him is to bring in a whole new demographic of younger affluent hipsters. Interior decorators & architects.

And with this economy, not too many WallStreeters are wandering into BrooksBros to celebrate with a new power suit.

I do think that crappy stores like H&M are cleaning up with slimsuits priced for young men. Now thats where Thom Browne is losing money. He hasnt courted the MadMen-loving crowd.

This is your market calling. We're going to need classic, conservative, highly wearable suits for the tough times ahead. Perhaps something along these lines:

How about it? Retain your image as l'enfant terrible by making the rest of gents' ready-to-wear look vain and silly, and clean up doing it.

As a gesture down-to-earth, you could call the new line Tom Brown. No h, no e.

The name Thom is nothing new. Thom McAn shoestores were around for most of the 20th century.

Actually, I believe Browne has had trouble trademarking his name as there is already a Thom Brown store out there.

Tom Ford (that "other" Tom) is making suits that are rather '30s at the top ... and rather '70s at the bottom.

.
"To be masculine, according to Mr. Ford’s design vision, is to fuse the debonair cut of a Savile Row suit with the swagger of a star from 1970s pornography."

From a NYT piece comparing the two designers.

Yep.

I've just come back from Milan. Happily, the extreme Brownesque fashions on its runways have not made their mark on the average Milanese male. On the streets, I saw an overwhelming abundance of good taste, as typified by the Italian gentleman below.

.

The good taste of the Italians was too much for poor old photobucket...I'll just visualize Marcello Mastroianni to fill the void.

I remember that article. Good stuff. Didnt we have a thread on it?

In the end, isnt it about two gay designers selling their opinions on how men can dress?

In the `40s, Vanity Fair's Helen Brown Norden wrote the piece Fashion is a Fairy, expounding on how gay designers make women wear hats that look like a shoe in some sort of cruel fashion joke.

While I have no proof, I suspect that gay men have had a profound effect on men's as well as womens fashion for a long long time.
