This Made Me Feel Guilty About Wearing Fur Felt Hats

Most of the mink that is raised around here,(by very well run mink ranches), is actually being bought by China right now.The trappers as well, are thankfull for the Chinese market, as prices for muskrat, beaver and racoon pelts are finally at a decent level after many years of very low prices.

And haha, I guess old Murray would have local fresh.

This is not really directly related, but talk about disgusting practices...the recent news that 100 million sharks get killed every year from fishing is pretty horrible. Sharks are getting driven to extinction and they play a vital ecological role...all for some shark-fin soup...

I'm not sure that I buy into the idea that the vintage fur trade was more humane than modern.
I don't buy it either. Vintage fedoras are quality items but not necessarily a more ethical choice.

This thread started out as a fairly straightforward opportunity to discuss the ethics (problematic to some, not to others) of fur production, but has drifted into a rant against PETA. Too bad, really, because PETA is merely a blip on the radar of a centuries-long and inevitable consideration of how species interact now and will in the future. (Ingrid Newkirk may well be regarded as a visionary woman centuries from now.)

To return to the crux of what can be considered a choice one way or the other, I vote vintage only.

Cheers
It's unfortunate the discussion of the ethics of animal use production gets reshaped into pointing out how extreme PETA is therefore their message must be flawed. I disagree with a lot of their attitudes and policy but I realize their fervor is the result of the breadth and depth of the problem.

That problem is not just "over there" in China. Our country has an awful track record of treatment towards animals. Sending production overseas allows Americans to consume with no thought as to how anything is made.

I don't mean to rant, I just wanted to present some valid points from their own website about some beliefs that, to me, are a bit extreme. I didn't necessarily even mean to say that they are wrong, I just think that they very often take their efforts a bit too far. Their basic cause is definitely honorable, but I, personally, do not believe in their approach.

My view on the subject at hand is that if people treat animals with respect it's okay to use the animals for meat, fur, or other animal products. I don't think that animals should be murdered for no reason, but I consider the intent to use the meat and/or fur to be an acceptable reason to kill an animal.

Also, I have a hard time not ranting about any topic, just take a look at my posts here and I think you'll see that most of them are at least two fairly large paragraphs long.

This thread started out with an ad for Peta. Really. Go back and look. Can't miss it, big video embedded right there. If the intent was straightforward there would have been no ad at all.

Ethical?

And once again, the only thing this thread does is make me feel guilty for supporting the despicable entertainment industry as long as I did.

I am of the opinion that "peta" is a Whack-job Terrorist Criminal Organization, using high profile womem models/celebrities to further their intent.

End of story.

Just seen this thread. Coming from a long line of trappers, hunters, fisherman, and including myself I will never feel guilt. The jewelry I create comes from bones, teeth, antlers, and tusks as you can see on my FB page. My Father taught me all about fur, being the first to use it in the book of Genesis to clothe Adam and Eve. If it was good enough for them I have no problem with it.

The issue isn't hunting, eating meat, etc. but the method used against animals as displayed in the video. Many of us here hunt, fish, and wear leather. We accept the responsible and moral harvesting and use of animal products.
History, heritage, tradition, and religious tracts don't justify immoral treatment of animals for increased profits.

The video is not credible. A body is still animated after death. The video uses creative editing to manipulate the viewer.

"The issue isn't hunting, eating meat,etc "
QUOTE: Feraud.

If it is about "peta", and it is, then it is about "hunting, eating meat, etc"; they cannot be separated, nor do they want to be after all is said and done.

The pics are their "Hook" , with the paint, break-ins, and other criminal & terrorist acts being more of the same but taken to an other level.

"Many of us here hunt, fish, and wear leather"
QUOTE:

Not if "peta" has any say in this matter.

"We accept the responsible and moral harvesting and use of animal products."
QUOTE:

Please re-read my above, also about the Seal Wars on the Canadian East Coast. Also try paul watson & his rainbow warrior exploits.

All of this can appear at a hatter, butcher, fish monger, near (and dear) to any one of us, at any time, aka "peta time".

Can we please move this thread to the thread graveyard (Observation Bar)? It's only tangentially related to hats, is certainly enjoyed by no one, and has only enhanced the Lounge by allowing me to add to my ever-growing "ignore" list - 65 or so members, many from this thread alone.

More reason for "Ignore Thread" feature....

Hi Everyone

I realize this is a very old thread but a situation just came up and I’m hoping for some help.

I was just about to buy a beautiful $300 hat of the brand Fernandez y Roche, a Spanish company, when someone told me about the possibility of rabbits being skinned alive.

Is it possible that that is also the case with this Spanish manufacturer?

Thank you!

Someone just shared this on Facebook and when I watched it, I just felt guilty about wearing fur felt hats.

I was now wondering if other fur farms where most felt makers get their fur are like this one in China.

Is there even a more humane method of extracting the fur from rabbits? I hope in other fur farms they at least kill the animal before skinning 'em. :eeek:
Yeah, this is a concern for me. Rabbit I can understand from the Australian perspective where they are a pest species, although that doesn't make it less cruel to kill an animal for it's fur.

On the whole I think I'll stick with wool.
