This Made Me Feel Guilty About Wearing Fur Felt Hats

I browsed through their site and they have issues even with wool. As far as I know, sheep are not killed for their fur, just shaved naked.

They have issues with every material taken from animals; fur, leather, wool, feathers, etc. I'd say it's overkill.

Still, what the video shows is really inhumane. Disgusting to say the least.

Just to add... Most people who see and handle my hats over here have no idea what it's made of. They even think it's leather, kinda like nubuck or suede. Hehehe.

DIVIDE & CONQUER:

Feeling better yet? It only gets worse!

http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2008/12/09/recent_studies_have_proven_pla.aspx

The above was not the only study; there being more during the 1960's that I can recall.

BTW, fish also have feelings.

Just "Keep it Up" and keep the movement going. Don't however complain to me when your wool & silk -

(Silk Moths have Rights too.) overcoat is spray painted along with your beaver fur felt hat by some deranged

fool from peta. Or the business down the street that sells Kentuckey Fried is painted over with "Killing Chickens

is Murder!" (Toronto, Canada.) "The end always justifies the means." eh what? When do we start to picket REMINGTON?

While we are at it, we should start also to do the same for WINCHESTER! You say that only Winchester that makes

fur felt? "What does it matter now" - they both have "Firearms Names", so they must both be bad, besides, Remington Arms

has a clothing line; they must be guilty of "something"! Maybe we should go after a company such as HATCO or others of their "ilk";

just Follow The Money. Blackmail has worked in the past due to "Yes, we will comply, not wanting any bad publicity you know."

These people are criminals with a pretty face as shown within the above video or even the likes of Emmy Lou Harris with her support

for them. (Sorry B A, even though you are no longer married to her.)

Have a Fun Day!
(And here I thought it was about The Economy.)

They are against anything that involves animals, jeesh! Reading their site made me less guilty and made me think they're over-zealous fools. They have no idea how much animals are needed to keep the world running. When I posted the video, I was feeling for the animals and a bit guilty. Now I've read PETA's reasoning, I think it's just ridiculous.

They're against animal experimentation... I guess they're also against medicine that could treat them when they get sick. If they're really against it, they should just stop buying medicine as well. Like the saying, "if the buying stops, the killing will too".

They're even against eating animals... Sheesh!

What's next? Mosquito rights? Cockroach rights? They'll say they have feelings too? Come on!!!

I'm not feeling particularly righteous about the dairy products I consume, knowing the conditions under which even dairy cows are kept these days -- and I'm descended from dairymen, and am related to people still on the farm (if it's even accurate to call those milk-production facilities "farms" anymore). Modest farms that used to milk maybe 40 cows are now milking four times that many, and those cows get milked more frequently. The cows never get outside anymore; they stand in their own waste, their feed is trucked in, their manure is kept in what resembles a swimming pool until it is trucked out. This also results in a shorter life for the cows. But if you wish to operate a viable dairy these days, that's what you pretty much gotta do, unless you go the niche-market (organic, mostly) route.

I'm more than happy to poison the rats that seem to proliferate around here. That's gotta be a torturous way to end a life. Doesn't bother me a bit. Maybe it should, but the long-established (in Western culture) anti-rat sentiment is thoroughly ingrained in me. I just can't stand those creepy little %#$*ers.

It's lost on me how a person who has no qualms whatsoever about dining on beef might be nauseated at the very thought of eating horse meat.

The point, if I have one, is that all of this is just so darned culturally defined. Laws of man rather than nature, obviously. My own preference would be to inflict no unnecessary pain and suffering, which I suppose means I had better be willing to pay a bit more (maybe more than a bit more) for animal products. And, truth be known, I'm not so sure I am willing.

A few years ago Calvin Trillin wrote a story for The New Yorker about dining on rat in China. Good, clean, mountain rats, he was assured. No dirty city rats. They were kept in cages in the kitchen. He was invited to go back and pick out the one he wanted. The cook reached in the cage, grabbed the rat by the tail and flung it hard against the floor. That rat was dead faster than you could say it. Sounds more humane to me than what we Yanks put chickens through.

I can see both sides of this issue. Going into the video, I saw the name Peta, and so I knew that the people who produced it are crazy (they more or less want animals to have rights equal to humans), but the fact that we dislike and disagree with the messenger doesn't make what they're saying untrue - indeed, the fact that they had video footage to back up their claims makes it quite likely that their claims in this instance are true. And, I'm not ok with that kind of treatment for animals. I'm not a tree-hugger, I eat meat virtually every day (note to self, I should probably cut down a bit), but I do think it's a pretty good principle that they should kill the animals BEFORE they skin them, ideally via a method that is relatively quick and certain (ie. doesn't leave a large fraction of the animals alive when they're skinned).

Regardless of whether you eat meat or not, wear leather, felt hats, are politically conservative or liberal I cannot imagine anyone seeing the video and not feeling a sense of guilt and shame over supporting (generally through denial) such business practices.

I'm no hemp wearing vegan but I can at least admit the cruelty towards these creatures and many others is a problem. As disgusting and shocking as the video is, I'm more shocked by the lengths some people go to deny this is a problem.

PETA is extremely biased. It would be interesting to see what a furrier would think of what's in the video. Animals can continue to move after death with nerves still firing away (think chickens running around with their heads cut off). Animal processing is not pleasant to look at. Unpleasant is not always inhumane.

Taking PETA as an only source for a lifestyle decision would be like deciding who to vote for based solely on either Ann Coulter or Al Franken. There's always two sides to every story.

Most fur in hat's made in the U.S. comes from South America. China does buy from South America also they compete with Winchester for fur and they win a lot of it. The fur that is used in China is for clothing other than Hat's. Man has been controling by Farming plants and Animals for centuries. If man did not raise cattle to use for food and clothing the cow we know today would not exist.

What group isn't extremely biased? Around this forum we've had near flame wars erupt over jacket manufacturers! The internet is full of biased positions of politics, automobiles, guitars, etc.
We're all biased about something and noting it doesn't necessarily invalidate a true point made by a group.

By all means one shouldn't make a decision based on one source. Go forth and independently research!

I dont' think the issue is that we raise and use animals but how we're doing it. It shouldn't undermine anyone's world view to acknowledge some practices are more or less human than others.

I think we each have to make our own best decision on consumption of animal products. I have 7 dogs, 10 cats, 3 horses and 2 birds at my house, so no question I am an animal lover. 3 of the dogs and most of the cats are rescued, as is one of the horses. While my wife and I don't eat extensive amounts of meat, we are not vegetarian or vegan either. I wear fur hats, leather belts and shoes, as does my wife.
As for animal experimentation, I am not particularly happy that it happens, but there is not really a better way to test medications and procedures except with living organisms.
My 15 year old neice decided to become a vegan after viewing videos at school depicting animal processing for meat. I feel that is a premature decision for a growing young person to make, and while it can be good for kids to know how and where our food comes from, it can have a major impact on their lives.
We also have to remember that other cultures have a different view of animals and what constitutes cruelty in their particular culture.

My personal view is that I want an animal to die as painlessly as possible. I've been part of killing and parting out a cow before and the initial cut to kill the cow didn't work. The cow took longer to die because of this and felt more pain in dying. There was no intent on the part of the ranchers to make the cow feel more pain. Mistakes happen. After a few minutes when they realized that the initial cut hadn't worked they worked the knife some more and the cow died.If this had been filmed with an intent to shock (and gain more funding) one could show the eyes of the cow as it moved in fear as it died. Dramatic music would have helped to make it more shocking as well. To the ranchers who were doing the killing this was just a routine and they were looking forward to the meat they would get from the cow. Death is not painless and is not pleasant for the dieing animal. If you can't live with that then a vegetarian lifestyle is probably a good option.

I let my oldest daughter watch because I want her to know where her food comes from. I want her to make her own decisions as to whether it's worth the pain to the cow for her to eat beef. I feel the same. If I can't stomach watching the animal die then I probably shouldn't eat its meat. One thing that this kind of direct contact helps with is instilling a strong desire to not waste meat or animal products. That animal lived and died for you to eat. If you let its meat spoil and throw it out after knowing what it went through then there's something wrong with you IMO.

Below is the cow we killed. It tasted good and was killed as humanely as possible.

Coming back off my rant above, PETA filmed a dog that was still alive after skinning. How many dogs were not alive during the skinning process? This isn't shown because it probably wouldn't benefit their cause. If they can find one dog that looks pathetic and sad because the skinner screwed up and didn't hit its head hard enough before skinning then they have a story they can work with and use to gain publicity. Remember that PETA is against the use of fur all together, whether the animal is killed humanely or not.

PETA is also against carriage rides... What's next? What will they be against of that has to do with animals?

I still cringe when I watch the video; it's disgusting and inhumane, but now I've researched about PETA, all I see is a bunch of ridiculous fanatic fools.

Man would not have evolved the way we are today without eating meat, domesticating animals and wearing their pelts against the cold and harsh weather.

"I dont' think the issue is that we raise and use animals but how we're doing it."
QUOTE: Feraud.

You are mistaken in that the entire "Animal Industry" is the target of peta, not just inhumane treatment of same.

"My 15 year old neice decided to become a vegan after viewing videos at school depicting animal processing for meat."
QUOTE: hatophile.

It's known as "Get-um while they are young." It is also unlikely that before/after the above, an other point of view was presented.
