In 1968, My ship was in port at Subic Bay in the Philippines. I was a junior officer and had been assigned to courier a package to Manilla. My destination was a building located among the federal buildings downtown and when I got out of my taxi, I noticed a large group of people coming down the stairs fronting the building. As I started up, something in their demeanor told me I should stand aside and give them room. In the midst of the group, I spotted Mrs. Marcos. I was surprised and no doubt stared at her and as they got close, she caught my eye....I will never forget the expression of arrogance and power on her face in the few seconds that we made eye contact. It gave me the same shiver that looking closely at a large snake sends down my spine.

No kidding? That's crazy! Anybody remember the Mark Knofler album Golden Heart? He did a song about her.

"Now we've got all of madame's requisites and all in madame's size
Madame's taste is truly exquisite she must accessorise
The belts are alligator the bags are kangaroo
Enchant? May I say the jade was made for you
Imelda baby Imelda baby what to do
All the poor people saying that they gotta quit paying for you
Imelda baby Imelda baby what to do
All the poor people saying that they gotta quit paying for you"

Mark Knofler rocks. Dire Straits rocks.

Not quite the same, but I often think about someone my Mother saw and told me about.

It was about 1989. Madonna was starting to wear her crazy pointy bra tops and my Mother saw a woman walking down the street wearing an old corset with suspenders - over her normal clothes.

She couldn't believe it and I have this image in my minds eye that just pops in - for no reason at all.

Lost

A summer day in 1968 Gatlinburg,Tennessee. I was 21. She stood alone at the end of the gift shop isle peering intently at Smoky Mountain souvenirs. Long light blond hair, feathered bangs, fair features. Nicely filling out a pastel blue print summer dress. Couldn't help but stare. She payed for her items and spoke what seemed like German to the cashier...he answered her back in that same foreign tongue. As she left,I couldn't help but follow her outside. I somewhat sadly watched her slowly disappear into the crowd. Returning to the gift shop, the cashier asked if I knew that girl. Kind of embarrassed I asked "you mean the girl that spoke German"? He said.."No she was Dutch..as my parents are". "Just wondered...she kept looking at you". Lost in a long ago crowd. Tho,still standing in that gift shop after all this time frozen in a memory.

When my grandmother was in the hospital, several years ago, (quite a few actually, now that I think back on it,) there was an older lady who wore a patient's gown, but didn't seem sick at all. She would walk up and down the hallways, and her face radiated such peace and happiness that she seemed completely out of place with the rest of the people there. I've always wondered who she was.

Another person I remember is a girl I saw a few tables away at a fish house in Georgia. She was eating with her family, apparently after church, and though I barely saw her face, she looked to me like one of the most beautiful people I'd ever seen. She wore a red shirt and a khaki skirt, and she still pops into my mind occasionally.

Well, I guess I should give my own experience. I have had a few beers in me from Friday happy hour down the street so I'll tell you about my experience...my mind a bit loose at the moment. For some reason I keep thinking about this guy way back in my college years...this is early 80s...while riding the campus bus (it was a large university campus). I don't know why I would think of a guy and not a gal, but that's not the point. It was winter and he was wearing a vintage long wool coat with the lapel turned up and a red long scarf around his neck. He never looked my way, but I think it influenced me to buy vintage coats after that...perhaps inspired me to look for vintage after that. His image pops into my head everyonce in a while. Life is wierd.
