Not too long ago, I had a friend show me his "officially licensed" IJ hat. He got it back when the first movie was still new. He was really proud of that hat. It had the pin and everything. He never wears it because, as he said, "That's the real thing." Until about a year and a half ago, I wouldn't have known the difference either. I simply smiled and complimented him on his nice hat.

Didn't someone famous once say something like "Most people just don't know what they don't know?" (or something similiar) How true that is.

Alas, my hat has my initials punched into the leather sweatband. And my initials are not IJ - and no pin either!!
Perhaps if I write "Indiana Jones" on my forehead, I'll join the officially licensed club.

However, I do have some official Indiana Jones bullwhips! They are an [almost] exact replica of the bullwhip in the movie [well, they're leather bootlaces] and carefully weathered for an authentic appearance [my dog, Gus, chewed on them]. Now to get a hat pin!!!

Some people said earlier on in this thread that it is OK to get the hat providing it is not to be used as an IJ hat. I disagree. If the hat is anything like the wool felt version in quality, it will fall apart from being looked at. The advert for the wool felt one said "it virtually laughs at rain". It should have been "it is laughed at by rain".

It is annoying how they lie about the durability of the hat and praise it so much. It's as if they are lying or they actually think they're right. I wonder if they even know there are hats out there that really are top quality.

Well, this reminds me of a joke from the high-tech industry:

Q: What's the difference between a used car salesman and a computer salesman?

A: The used car salesman knows when he's lying.

In other words, for mass market hat vendors who deal mainly with $20-40 cloth or wool felt hats for the dance club, skater, and tourist markets, the fur felt IJ is the best hat they've had in their hands, and have no frame of reference for a real one, let alone knowledge of the resilience and durability of vintage hats or the current handbuilt ones.

Although if you like the hat I say go for (as long as you're not expecting it to look like Indiana's), but the thing that makes me laugh is the ThinkGeeks line: "There's also a little Indiana Jones charm on the hatband (which is easily removed for a more movie-accurate look)." Yeah that'll make it look more movie accurate!

remove pin, jump in the deep end of the pool swim under water with hat on to the shallow end, stand up and there you have a nice screen accurate "INDY" hat aah, poison darts are optional

Maybe they're doing a service by keeping skinny kids out of oversized hats that make them look ridiculous (vd. COW).

Not a bad point. One sees too many skinny kids showing off their Indy gear and ridiculously over-sized hats (for their frame).

I did not know that the Village hat Shop had 4 different Indiana Jones fedoras available.

It seems almost unbelieveable the number of Indiana Jones themed fedoras are offered.

Many of the custom makers will do one for you.

Some of the non-licensed manufacturers have a hat or two that is more than a nod at the Indiana Jones legacy.

Then we have Club Obi Wan listing a series of "How To's" that start with a variety of existing model fedoras altered to recreate the iconic archeologist's hat.

I marvel at the original hats & when really good representations are made.

I was at the Long Beach retail store for Village Hat Shop. To their credit, although it doesn't show up on their website, they carried the Christy's Adventurer in the store and pointed that one out as a good IJ-style hat.

The real Indiana Jones hat is made by the London hatter Herbert Johnson. It's their Australian model called the Poet. It was used in Raiders, so it was the original hat. No other hat should really be called an Indiana Jones hat, the makers and sellers deserve to be shot with a Smith & Wesson .45 ACP with the barrel cut down.
