Huh! The thing is, general opinion about the 5 blades is polarizing, with some reviews claiming it's the closest, safest and least fussy shave ever and the others saying there are zero benefits upgrading from 3 blade setup like the Mach 3. The disposable ones don't feel nice at all but I've never had the courage to try the 5 blades 'cause it's much pricier. But I will now, once I use up all the cheapos.

Lots of people are switching to standard razor setup but that seems like too big of a fuss...

I'm really glad I stopped thinking my appearance has to rely on my hair and beard. It's so liberating just getting rid of it all tho I still say beards are super cool. Just not mine.

Honestly this is the peak of shaving technology, everything invented after that was marketing BS to get you to spend more money on razors:

The quality of the blades you get in that setup is much better than any Mach 3/5 or however many blades they use now. It's also much cheaper in the long run and it's that much less plastic you use in your life compared to cheapos.
Get yourself an old razor and some Feather brand razor blades, you won't regret it.
There is definitely a learning curve, but once you have it down the difference is incredible, especially if you have irritations from shaving, the single blade is much less irritating than the multi.

Even my GF has moved away from the modern lady razors, she uses an old Gillette Lady and also finds it superior to the modern 3 blade razors:

Oh I use them myself. But they don’t work well on heads. That’s my issue. I use them and prefer them for my face bay far. Best shave I can get; and I enjoy the ritual of doing it. But it takes ages to do an entire head and I at some point usually end up nicking myself. I have to use a 3/5 to get my head done. Now a barber can do it with a traditional set up or if you’re outside the US where barbers can use actual straight razors those are great.

Yeah unfortunately I’m with the @ton312 and @MrProper crew! Not unfortunately though I honestly don’t mind being balding and it’s never bothered me. Only problem is in winter my heads always cold and in summer it’s getting sunburned! Haha.

But yeah I don’t recommend shaving with a safety razor for your head. Again I love the plethora of small batch, or boutique shave soaps and whipping up a other myself. The cool brushes you can get. Or keep it really old school and stick to the basics.

There’s some alone time where you get to have the small ritual of self care, and feeling your best. Then a nice aftershave or eu de parfume. Just trust me don’t attempt shaving your head that wayhaha. Won’t end quickly or painlessly.

Edit: to add yup over the life of shaving this way you can save a lot of money if you keep it simple. Initial investment for long term savings and quite a lot if you keep it simple. But knowing the traits we here on TFL have it can be just as time consuming and expensive trying different handles, different blades, different soaps and creams!

Get a Wahl super taper, they are super tough, i have been rocking the number 2 buzz cut for a total of 20 years and have had two trimmers, the first one lasted 15 years, the second one is 5 years old and still rocking.
I usually cut my hair every 2 weeks and could not imagine paying someone to do it for me.

I shave mine twice a week, working on the supposition that my shiny head looks better than one with hair on the sides. Sometime I wonder if I should bother…

I've been thinking the same lately, and it's the only way I've been able to curb unnecessary spending, being aware of the happy feeling you get when you're looking at pictures of something, usually a jacket, online and steering myself away from looking at it, wary of the serotonin hit. I kind of believe in saving for some reason as well.

I'm the same, except a number 2 buzz has been my default since 1994 (because I'm old).

I haven't paid for a haircut since then. Goodness knows how much money I've saved (to waste on extravagances).

I shave my head with the Eveready 1912 and I haven't cut myself, not once not even on the face. That thing is a weapon of precission.

What happens sometimes is that when I use a new SE blade it can be a bit harsh if you apply too much pressure.

and then if I an average American were to read that I would say hey these are super cheap only 393.00 dollars! Ha Since we use , instead of . Which in this one instance I prefer the way America does it. What I cannot stand is how prices do not include tax and the price you see listed on 99% of things except the few tax free items that exist is never actually the price. Tax added after starting the purchasing process not just added into the total cost is the most obnoxious stupid American thing haha.

I've been shaving my head for almost a year now. I used to go to the barber twice a month and have him (A shaved head barber as it happens) fade and keep it short at the top (3-4)

Well, I moved and in order to save some money and time and decided to shave it. Best decission I've ever made. So practical, I feel great and save around 30€ a month for other things (I used to tip my barber every time).

Welcome to the club! I started noticeably thinning in my late 20s; wasted four years or so on shorter and shorter buzz cuts trying to hide it. Been doing the full shave since 2006 now, never regretted it, just wish I'd done it sooner. So low maintenance. Also great for playing with wigs and prosthetics if you're into the costume thing!

On the matter of eyes I rock contact lenses though am thinking of investing in a pair of specs for first thing in the morning. On the issue of teeth I lost a front incisor a few years ago and ended up with a small glue in denture which is a complete mare to live with. Am currently most of the way through implant surgery which means the denture will be no more from July..not cheap but I’m sick of glueing a piece of plastic in my mouth everyday.

Dabbled with contacts some years ago. I was doing a lot of Rocky Horror at the time, and teetering around a dark cinema on five inch heels with blurry vision was tricky... Also, glasses with a costume of any sort where they stick out as wrong looks bad.... Single use contacts were great for costume stuff. Even wore them a lot on and off out of drag. Then I got glasses which I actually liked, and that was the end of contacts for anything other than a specific costume look, which is a much rarer requirement these days.

Dabbled with the five blade Gilette doe for a bit years ago. The sole difference I noticed was that the extra "shaping" single blade (for which I have zero call) on the top occasionally caught my finger feeling my way round the back of my skull. Double the price of a three blade, no advantage - went right back to the three. I seem to be far from alone: despite much marketing encouraging folks to "upgrade", the three blades are still on the market. Only use a cartridge for my head, though. For my face, they're a rubbish shave compared to a single-blade DE safety razor.

When I first went down to a number 2 all over, I bought my own clippers. I did work it out against paying for a buzzcut - the clippers paid for themselves within six months. I got four years out of them. Nearly twenty years later, they came back out of the drawer when we got a dog. We've since replaced them with a quieter, cordless pair for Madame, who hates being groomed (she's a rescue, bless her, and when she was first taken in off the street in Romania - they reckon it was anywhere between three and five years she lived like that - she was a terrible, matted mess and had to be totally shaved). Two and a half years in, I've saved a fortune, given a professional groomer would charge thirty quid a pop!

How do you find the angling? I can get the 'worst' off my head with a DE if I leave it four days, at which point it's too long for a cartridge razor unless I take it down to a .8 first with the dog's clippers. Beyond that, I find it hard to get the angle right by feel alone. The single edge might be the answer - more of a fixed angle, isn't it?

Alfa Romeo Stelvio quadrifoglio. I would love one of these as a collector item and keep the miles low before they stop producing gasoline vehicles. 510hp twin turbo V6 with a 0-60 of 3.4 seconds all wrapped up in a family practical crossover suv. All that fun comes with a huge price tag so it sadly won’t happen but I do have the less powerful Q4 version which I have been happy with.

That’s my blue one the night I picked it up last September. It’s just a 4 cylinder turbo but manages to get 5.4 seconds 0-60 which is crazy for a 4 cylinder.
