The Cleveland, OH retired auto worker John Demjanjuk, accused of being the especially brutal camp guard known as Ivan The Terrible (Occupied Poland, Sobibor), has been denied a stay of deportation by the US Supreme Court. That's the last word on it from this side of the sea. Off he goes to Berlin to stand trial.

I remember this story from way back in the... 1970s? He is 89 now.

CNN story is here.

Scotrace I had a Professor named Telford Taylor who was one of the attorneys involved in the Nuremberg trials. He was quite old when I was his student, nevertheless, that experience was clearly etched in his mind. This guy was brilliant.

In the back of our minds, I suppose we wonder if they have the right man and if they do, (I have little reason to think otherwise), I cannot help in examining his face in this photograph and pondering the hundreds of people who's last act on this earth consisted of viewing it as well......

We have no conception of the horror.

He'll likely die before a trial begins. In the meantime, he won't have to pay for his food, housing, or medical care - which, based on his arguments against revoking his citizenship & deportation, will be extensive.

He was in Australia for a while too. Interesting that the Supreme Court in Israel did not convict him when he was tried in their jurisdiction.

He was proved by the Supreme Court of Israel NOT too have been "Ivan The Terrible" of the TREBLINKA death camp. But
Soviet records provided to the US show him to have been a conscript put to work by the Allgemeine SS as a guard at Sobibor. He has always maintained that he was never at Sobibor and that the records were forged by the Soviets because he was a Ukrainian in the German Army. With his German Army ID papers, he was able to avoid being
returned to Soviet control, and was able to emigrate to the US. For more info on what the Soviets did to their own people who were captured or conscripted by the Germans, google Operation Keelhaul.

ridiculous

Don't worry about the Soviets who were traitors, Stalin also apparently ordered the deaths of large numbers of partisans who'd fought to defend their local areas on the basis that they had become too independent of central authority....hard to imagine the mindset isn't it........
