The Tweed Suit

One thing I noticed about modern tweeds is that they are almost always available only as jackets, not complete, matching suits. I love wearing my tweed jacket with a pair of officer pinks or the like, but nothing says "professor" like a three-piece tweed suit.

Here is one I just finished for someone:

Does anyone have any examples of vintage tweed suits?

Kind regards,
Magnoli

Very nice! Is that the "Princeton" model? Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere; do you make the armholes high-cut? Is the button hole on the lapel functional? High waisted trousers with suspender buttons?
It's a fine looking suit!:eusa_clap

Yes, this is the one I dubbed "The Princeton" after "Attilla the Professor" (aka Henry Jones, Sr.) from which most of the suit was based (with a few changes). All of the specs you mentioned can be incorporated. The one shown has a square lapel button (but no hole), suspender buttons on high-waisted pants and moderately high armholes (not quite as high as I personally prefer on my suits).

Kind regards,
Magnoli

Isn't a bit Hot to be talking about tweed?

lol lol... I'm just kidding you guys... I really enjoy tweed... if I had nothing but, I think I'd be one happy camper! I have three pairs of 40's tweed pants... they're great! I love how they just don’t wrinkle!

As far as suits go, I couldn't agree more with Magnoli! You don't see any one making full tweed suits! Why is that? Oh yeah, I forgot, it's too fashionable for this modern world!

Every one seems to mention single breasted tweed three pieces, and coats with ticket pockets... mostly the English cut or style of tweed suit... nothing wrong with this model but, I'm just kind of board with this as being the only style that is mentioned when tweed is brought up. What I would love to see is a late 1930's styled double breasted, nice wide lapels with a belted/pleated back! Looking like a professor is fine for some, but I want to look like a snappy young man who's got all the answers!

I remember finding a beautiful light green tweed 40's two piece DB with gorgeous lapels and cut... fantastic stuff! It was long enough but, just a little narrow for me. I've wanted a nice light gray, green, tan or brown tweed DB suit for a wile. I wish Daniel Riser was around, he has a swell DB three piece Heart Schaffner & Marx dated 1936 I think... it's a super swell suit... maybe Lauren has some photos of it some where.

Any way, Magnoli, I'll see if I can dig up some info and images on a true 1930's DB tweed suit if you'd like!

Sure, send me what you've got. The thing I like about tweed is that it really looks and feels more vintage than the smoother wool blends, etc. Therefore, as you say, I think other styles in tweed would look smashing! Just need those guinea pigs.

I was thinking of making my next suit (a single breasted peaked lapel, with half belt back and db vest) out of the camel tweed I've got, but I think I'm going to go with linen instead as a good linen suit is really lacking in my wardrobe.

Kind regards,
Magnoli

This is close to what I'm talking about!

I have always loved this suit of Glenn Miller's... I believe it's a heavy wool flannel more then a tweed but, it had a tweed kind of look to it... I'd love a suit in this cut and style that's made of a light brown tweed or a nice light jade green tweed... if such thing exists!

a photo for reference...

My favorite vintage style is the Double Breasted suit... nothing says "vintage" more then such a suit in my opinion!

Here are the tweeds I have available:

mc-swatch-2010.jpg

Ash/Silver, Brown/Tan, Gold-flecked Brown Herringbone, Camel, Dark Olive

I was planning on doing a suit for myself in "Camel". But I think the "Dark Olive" would also look quite good.

Kind regards,
Indy

British Tweed DB from 1947

I remembered seeing this one in another thread... A very nice tweed from an eBay UK auction. I thought I would post some of the photos here as they are very apropos.

Looking at that suit in this weather is making me wilt.

It's nice though.

I'm with you Ray, also, why is every single breasted tweed suit made today a two button? A nice three button would be sweet! Not to mention a classic double breasted as I've said over and over! I guess I'm the only one who feels a double breasted tweed like you'd see in the 30's and 40's as much as anything else would be a nice thing?

I like the British style, it's my heritage after all. I think the brown Scott & Co. fedora I got from Marc Chevalier would go very well with this suit.

So now I'm up to three more Indy suits that I want to get, including a white linen Sydney Greenstreet suit, a black pinstripe peak-lapel DB and this brown tweed. Gotta ask the boss for a raise... lol

Tony, I could totally see you in a nice tweed suit... a suggestion:

Three piece, single breasted, three button, peaked lapels... nice patch pockets! That sir would be a fine look on you!
