I actually knew this one!

I must admit I felt pretty stupid that it took a couple of years (seriously) for the book & line of Christmas items at Nordstrom & Bon Marche (now swalloed up by Macy's) here in the Seattle area to finally sink in on me - the holiday line about "Olive - the Other Reindeer." If you don't get it, as I didn't for the longest time, it'll hit you all at once after repeating it a few times. Or PM me.

That is an interesting read and reinforces what I believe about "the old days". The realities of the Golden Era are very similar to own own, with the exception of cooler stuff. ;)

I've always liked the story of Rudolph, and learning how he came to be hasn't changed anything at all for me. Except that I now have a name to thank and to respect for his creativity and talent. :)

I didn't know which company did that, either.

I also remember reading that Coca Cola was largely responsible for making Santa's suit red. Before that, it was often brown.

We had a copy of the original Wards storybook kicking around the house for years when I was growing up -- it had been my mother's when she was a tyke, and somehow it survived long enough for me to get hold of it. And then my sister got it, and then my brother, and by then there wasn't much left of it but the glow...

I much preferred the original story to the TV special -- on TV they made Santa out to be a mean, cranky bigot. Not anybody I'd want coming down the chimney...

That's another myth. According to Snopes, Santa's red suit was introduced by a Boston printer in 1885. Read about it here. Yet, here's an image of Santa in red that I saw on a DVD I have of classic Christmas specials (and looked for online by Googling "U. S. Confection Co.") that's dated 1868: seventeen years earlier. This is the same picture that was on the DVD.

Merry Christmas,

Okay, from the gist of this thread, I gather there is some doubt about Rudolph, who he is, how he began. Well...cross arms, stomp-stomp, pout-pout...I'm not even clicking on the link.

Rudolph is so real! He's on TV every year and TV never lies! So there...raspberries. ;) lol

:eek:fftopic:
If you'd like a really sweet children's book, with lovely illustrations and story line of generosity and thinking of others at the holidays, try "Santa Mouse" by Michael Brown. I know it was out in the late 60's as I had a copy of my own. A Google blurb says it was first published in 1966. Anyway, I love this book, mine was passed to younger cousins who absolutely destroyed it but I replaced it with a copy from clearance at B&N.
