Just got it in the mail today. I am so pleased it's hard to describe. The hat is an absolutely perfect fit, could not fit better. Everything about the hat is unique, not just the 1" brim. The color is a deep charcoal. The center crease, instead of being a "typical" one, is more like a sunken elipse on the top of the hat. The felt is thick and lush. Hat is unworn. The sweat band has a series of v-shaped ridges at the back, I assume for added comfort (less sweat trapped), and opposite is inscribed "Cusion-Aire". Elsewhere it reads "Caravel", which might be the style name? And it says "A Thomas Begg original New York". The hat is wider at the base than I expected, at least the appearance is of a wider base with not much taper to the crown (which I prefer). It has become my second skin within only hours. I'll post better pictures asap. For now:

Sorry about that guys. I hadn't bothered to read the FAQ about attachments. I'll try this again. (Thanks for the kudos WEEGEE.)

Here's a shot of the wide ellipse crown. It needs to be blocked.

The cool ridges at the back of the sweat band make for an ultra comfortable fit.

like hatatude...way beyond cool.

enjoy...you wear it well.

So, hatters and historians . . .

Does the "wide ellipse" bash have a name? My Homburg has the same thing. Concept-wise, it works like a teardrop -- the crease is there for looks, but it accommodates a lot more head inside the hat than a conventional crease would.

For that matter, is there an accepted term for people (or their hats) whose heads are unusually tall above the line of the sweat band? High-domed? Swell-headed? Intelligent? When I put on a snap-front Ivy cap, the snap pops open. Boaters are a complete loss.

And yes, that Thomas Begg is a nice hat! Great lining too!
