Great job jpb. It looks as if it was done in the store. I can tell you're a diy'er.

And skyvue, I wouldn't hesitate to wear that out at all. You look good. You might have said in an earlier post, but what kind of hat band is that? I'd say that multi colored band would allow the hat to go with more colors than a single color would. Just my opinion.

It's a puggaree band I picked up at the recently shuttered Arnold Hats here in NYC. I'm probably going to get a fairly wide navy grosgrain ribbon put on the hat at JJ Hat Center, but I didn't want to spend the money till I was sure I could pull wearing that wide a brim.

I was afraid I'd look like the owner of a rubber plantation; when it comes to hats, I'm strictly a fedora guy, I'm afraid.

I do like having a few detachable puggaree bands I can put on when inclined to do so, though.

Brim/crown size advice?

I'm thinking of ordering a Guatemalnan fine palm fedora and have read all the posts where this is discussed on this thread. But...How do you figure out attractive brim/crown proportions for your hats? Do you do it by height/body type? Or do you just go by whatever constitutes "classic" fedora or panama proportions? For instance, I'm 5"9" with a "large" (not fat actually) build. Does it make a difference or do you simply go with whatever height and width hat proportions appeals to you?
Thanks-
js

I went with a 6" crown on this hat, as I wanted to experiment with the kind of deep, sharp-edged bashes I often see on hats in old movies. The crowns of my other hats all touch my head already, and the bashes aren't that deep.

This bash is deeper (and it still touches my head, dang it).

And I asked for a 2 1/2-inch brim, my favored width, but ended up with something closer to 2 7/8.

I took my Sunbody to J.J. Hat Center for a) a navy blue ribbon and b) a new bashing.

The guy at J.J. told me he was impressed with the bash I'd done, which made me feel good, but he definitely improved on it. It now (just barely) misses touching my head, and yet the crown is a bit lower than it was.

And then he was kind enough to snap my picture outside the shop.

I'm pretty pleased with the hat now, I must say.

Hey tm3. I guess I can't speak for everyone else because mine have had modifications (vent holes added), but my Sunbody hats are much cooler than my felt hats. I've been getting a lot of wear out of them this summer.

Because the Milan I ordered from Miller Hats was way too small and they had no hats remaining in larger sizes (grrr...), I've been wearing my Sunbody on a daily basis and enjoying it.

thanks, rrog.

you are just over the big hill from me so we face similar summer weather (i.e. warm and humid).

gus

Hi folks, my first post to Fedora Lounge. Not even a long time lurker! But lots o' hats.

This spring I got a 5" brim Sunbody Gus. I was out for a two hour walk in the hot sun yesterday - the shade from that brim is really nice! But my sweetheart won't be seen in town with me in that hat. Just too outlandish, here in east coast USA.

So now I have on its way that $36 sale fedora with the 3" brim. She can't quite believe I'm getting ANOTHER hat, but maybe she'll allow herself to be seen with me wearing it!

Well, I got a compliment from a pretty lady at the post office today, so the Gus can't be irredeemable! My guess is that my sweetheart doesn't so much have an opinion about the hat, but worries about other people's opinions. We are complicated creatures!

The fedora arrived on Friday. I wore it to the swim meet on Saturday... my sweetheart didn't even notice! I also have a straw Panama fedora - I guess she assumed that's what I was wearing. The Sunbody palm leaf fedora was just great out in the sun!

My first Sunbody...

New member here... very first post.

I am planning on going on vacation soon in a tropical environment during rainy season. I needed a "summer hat" that would stand up to unexpected rains, so I didn't think a straw hat would do the job. As I searched, I came across Sunbody. I searched some more to find out how users liked them and I found... here! You guys became my source for ground truth on the hats

After reading through the comments, I ordered my Sunbody fedora. Taking some tips from you guys, I got a wider ribbon and eyelets on the crown for ventilation. They promised the hat in two weeks. I got it in one week (GREAT service). Here's the initial impressions:

1) The hat is gorgeous! I love the hat.

2) It's definitely a heavier "fabric" than straw. So the ventilation in the crown was a GREAT idea.

3) It is the most comfortable fit I've ever had from a non-custom hat.

4) It is astoundingly easy to shape.

5) Did I mention that I love the hat?

Thanks to everyone here for the ideas and insights that led me to this hat.

Here's the photos:
