Can anyone tell me how the felt of the Premiere Stratoliners compares? Thanks!

I have a Premiere Stratoliner in mink & a regular one in caribou. The Premiere is not as coarse & has a much nicer hand to it which is more likely due to extra pouncing. The felt is denser which has more heft to it in the Premiere. The felt shapes so much better too, brim & crown.

In case someone is looking at adding a wider ribbon to their modern Stratoliner, here is a picture of my conversion...

I just joined the club. It turns out one of my recent acquisitions is a newer Strat which had a hatband that was a little scruffy to my eye. In any case, the seller turns out to be none other than our own @bond and I was able to get a nice vintage band installed in place of the original.

Here are some pics of it after the new band was installed.

Very nice.

I'm going to have to make a stab at this sewing thingy......Strat looks good with wide ribbon.[huh]

Thanks guys. I'm really tickled with how it turned out, for sure. As far as trying to make replacement ribbons, I'm going to be trying my hand at some replacements in the near future on some of my hats. In particular I have a Dobbs that has a fair bit of moth larvae damage that wasn't disclosed in the auction, but can be covered with a wider ribbon.

I've shared this in the "what are you wearing" thread, but I wanted to officially add my recently purchased modern Stratoliner to the club.

It's a Premiere Stratoliner, labeled "Royal Deluxe Stetson" in the sweat. I picked this up at the Hatco (Resistol/Stetson) Outlet in Garland, Texas. The last photo shows what I believe the reason this hat was downgraded to outlet status. It looks like the seam got a little off as the sweat was being sewn into the hat. It's in the back, and is mostly covered by a minor adjustment of the ribbon and the upcurl in the brim.

The felt is excellent in every way. I know much comparison is made between modern and vintage felt, but in my amateur opinion, this felt isn't any lesser in quality. It's just different. It's thicker and heavier than my vintage Royal Deluxe. It feels a nice step up from the Akubra Imperial felt I have (comparable to the Heritage?). It's much softer and more luxurious. The hat is stiff, but not too stiff. It originally came shaped with a cattleman's crease, but I asked if they'd reshape it into a teardrop. The felt handled it perfectly with no lines left from the previous crease (as with the modern Open Roads). I just love the feel of this felt. It's creepy, I know, but I find myself sitting there petting my hat. It deserves the love.

Official color: Cornhill

For the price of one Benjamin, I couldn't be more pleased.

I agree Dave, I think you hit the nail on the Head. Definitely high quality felt, just different from vintage. Those are the best pics I've seen of the Cornhill color. The Cornhill color is hard to convey in photo's, and kind of changes depending on the lighting. Congrats on a great catch! You stabbed the Tuna on this one buddy!!!!:eusa_clap

I think I just bought Hat Dandy's conversion on Ebay. It arrived today, looking very nice. I didn't notice the 1 1/4 inch ribbon for about 20 minutes. Then I did a search for TFstrob 1024 0373 Strats with a wide ribbon. Needless to say, I didn't find anything. Then I remembered reading this thread a few days ago. The resemblance to Hat Dandy's conversion is amazing. Maybe just a fraction of an inch thinner. Still haven't figured out why there was duct tape inside the sweat.

So...being bored and after a little wine I decided my premier Stratoliner needed a change. It just never has had the shape I like. The brim was either flanged off center or something. It always had the "Raiders turn" no matter what I did with it. Teed me off. I did like how the brim looked when it was up so after months of fighting with it, I finally went with it. I always admired the picture Tommy used for a long time in his avatar so narrow brim-up cattleman's crease it is for now on with this lid.
