Just as well we all enjoy depression era clothes and lifestyles...

Market's very jittery in London too,and NY isn't even awake yet...

As Lileks says today, it's like a cold. No matter what, you're going to have three days of misery, then on the mend. "Spray the markets with zinc!"

It doesn't much matter what happens today or tomorrow or the next day. Over a period of many years these cycles balance each other out. Maintain a well diversified portfolio across distinct asset classes and let the chips fall where they may.

Prat is another good Brit. pejorative.

Off topic but I've got a British friend online who sends me insult ideas on a regular basis. My current favorite is wanking tosspot.

Mmm.. yes... Also pronounce Git, as 'get'.

'Ya numpty' is another favourite.

As in... Those traders are a bunch of numpties. (Halfwits..)

Anyway...

Market still sinking like a lead balloon.

Since the Fedora Lounge evokes the Era of 1920s - 1950s

there were some depressions which were survived as well.

Exactly. Too many people in dept and buying beyond their means. What's sad is that they used to teach finances and budget in highschool, and I don't think they do anymore. Or if they do, it's not a mantatory class. Very sad.

Spot on.

It might be interesting to speculate on how being fully invested in the S&P 500 (SPY) might affect one's long term wealth. For example, when the Forbes 400 was first published it took $75 million to get on. Now it takes about $1 billion. Consequently, most of the folks who were on the original list can not be found on the current one. If, however, they had only been invested in a good S&P index fund their assets would still qualify as the S&P has appreciated faster than the asset requirement to qualify for the Forbes 400.

Buy SPY. Go back to sleep.

If I ever have children I will drum finances into their heads more than anything else (except maybe physical and emotional health). I cringe when I see people spoiling their kids with financial/material things. The knowledge of monetary value and their own power over it is one of the most important things you can teach a child - at least, as long as money is a necessary evil.....
