Circa late 1920’s early 1930’s English Velour ‘Extra Best Manufacture’

‘Extra Best’ Velour unbranded snap brim of the early 1930’s. Very unusual for an English hat, it has a welted-in edge, although this is so subtle it is barely noticeable. It is black and has a long nap fur which I have brush flat like a silk top hat. The Grosgrain band is a replacement but authentic to the original proportionally. Despite its claims of being ‘Extra Best’ the leather band inside suggests it is actually quite a modest hat. The lining is a nice yellow raw silk though, which gives this hat a lovely ancient feel. I have another long nap fur hat of German manufacture which I have not yet photographed but will add to the ‘Hitler’s’ Hats’ thread as it is an exact likeness.

fftopic: But FYI mrdaddy, the Appalachian Trail runs approximately 41 miles along the Ridge of South Mountain through Maryland.

I'll admit the trek is fairly easy by Appalachian Trail standards, with only a 1,650 foot change in elevation from the low point at the Potomac River (250' elevation) to the high point at High Rock (1,900' elevation). Your geography lesson for today.

Actually mayserwegener, seeing that Bittner has re-kindled a yen to have one of these for my collection. Thanks for posting those pics.

Apparently the foremost authority on Alpine hats and their biggest proponent resides in a state known for its inner harbor and blue crabs, ie: completely unrelated to mountainous pursuits. I found that rather ironic.

I guess only people on cattle ranches should wear western style (which seem to get a pass on this board) hats. I love traditional Alpen hats. The Habig I posted has a amazing long hair felt finish (imo best on this thread). I never said I was an expert but I do have a large collection. I wear them more than my dress fedoras (imo a Alpen hat). They fit perfect into my casual life style.

My $4.99 Dobbs Twenty-Five Guild Edge Alpine-style hat finally arrived today, so I thought I'd post it here, as well as over at the Dobbs Diner. Beautiful hat, but really needs a good cleaning, as the cream-colored felt is quite dingy brown in spots. A few moth divots, but these aren't very noticeable with the longhair finish.

Could date from 1944-1955, roughly, but best guess places it in the early-'50s. I don't know when Hat Corp. started using oilskin liner tip protectors, but I think the general consensus here is that companies were using them by the early-'50s.

Mayserwegener, or anyone, what's the history of this style of hat in America?

The reorder tag is buried under the liner, so I couldn't get a photo, but it's the standard Hat Corp. one we've seen from the '50s on, though the tag style could date back to the previous decade. There is no union tag present, but on the underside of the sweatband there used to be a two-inch long tag for something. I haven't seen a union tag that size, though.

Specs:
5 3/8" crown
2 1/4" brim - not as stingy as it looks!

The hat doesn't fit me, but maybe I can convince my wife to wear it.lol

As soon as I received this one, Dinerman's black fuzzies came to mind.

I have a long-hair, but I have never worn it because it has a couple of prominent bare spots (0.5 cm) where the 'hair' has been nibbled away by moths before I acquired it.

Anyone have a thought on how one might repair the bare spots? I'm open to experimentation. Indeed, I have even considered scrubbing the bare spots with a wire brush to see if I can raise some 'hair'. I've got nothing to lose, because the hat is not wearable as is.

How about a can of that spray for male-pattern baldness? Some of these hats have more hair on them than I have on my head.

I know, I know. A black hat for the black-hat-hater. Time will tell if it works out or is released into the wild.

It would be interesting to see an original ribbon style on the hat. While I'm not a huge fan of the pug style on this one, the silvery gray looks great against the black. *If anyone has something that would work, I'd love an old ribbon to slip over this one for a test run.*
