I am not usually fond of long-hair finishes, but every time I see those two old black hats from the twenties that you found, Dinerman, I am quite taken by them. I just might need to commission a replica of them some day.

Dinerman never fails to amaze me; when anybody has one kind of hat, he seems to have at least five outstanding or interesting examples! Where on earth does he store all this stuff?

Although not a big fan of the fuzzy wuzzies myself, I am intrigued. We have two dogs and (currently) two cats, and there is a certain amount of grey undercoat pervading the general environs, despite sporadic grooming efforts. If I had one of these chapeaux, not only would the stray fur be un-noticed, but it would become incorporated into the hat itself, presenting something of a "devil make hair" statement. Or maybe that was "devil may care"...

Anyway, bravo for the pictures.

Moths attacked my long-hair!

I have a long-hair, but I have never worn it because it has a couple of prominent bare spots (0.5 cm) where the 'hair' has been nibbled away by moths before I acquired it.

Anyone have a thought on how one might repair the bare spots? I'm open to experimentation. Indeed, I have even considered scrubbing the bare spots with a wire brush to see if I can raise some 'hair'. I've got nothing to lose, because the hat is not wearable as is.

Hatboxes four deep stacked to the ceiling, with 7 out at all time, rotated once a week, plus the constant comings and goings of the ones that I deal (though now they're all gone and I've closed up shop). I've dealt a lot more than I've kept, so that's where a lot come from, though I'm a sucker for early long nap hats, so I've kept most of the ones I've come across.

I was amazed, though, how easy it was to pick which two I was taking to school with me.

It's interesting, though how different the finishes are between long haired hats. The '20s black one with no labels with the overwelt and almost homburg brim has a finish that's almost prickly- the felt is fairly soft, but the individual hairs are stiff. The Black marshall fields has an incredibly soft, luxurious, deep finish, very much like a super deep velvet. It's amazingly shapeable, and though it's thick felt, and has that finish, feels like it has nearly no stiffener in it at all. It's also interesting because it has a dimensional brim, long on the sides and front, short in the back. The Dobbs and Stetson both feel very much like a normal '30s or '40s fedora, just with a longer haired finish. Both are pretty soft, though, and when you put them on, the crown pops out, and you have to reshape them while they're on your head. The borsalino was quite stiff, with a pronounced, but not so dense nap to it. Moving into the '60s, there are the long finished tyroleans, most of which I have not been terribly impressed with, with the exception of Borsalinos and some German made ones. Borsalino had a whole range of fuzzy finishes, ranging from a peach-like fuzz, to a long hair, to a full on plush.

I would be curious to hear from those who can "pull off" wearing these hats
what they think the trick might be. I know Dinerman can do it. Anyone
want to offer tips? I can wear the Knox and Stetson no problem. But that
Angora Borsalino is a challenge.

Sure, and I do. But I wonder how these finishes were intended
in the styles of the Golden Era. Did people think a furry hat looked
better with a fur coat? With a beard? With a suede jacket?
Sometimes this can be very interesting and useful to know.
