I love all these longhair finishes. If I ever get enough money to buy a custom hat (unlikely) it will very likely be a black, longhair homburg. I have a nice tux, and it would be great to have a fantastic hat to go with it.

(2) There's a recent post in the Art/VS thread with a silk finish, and he's mentioned them before, but I haven't seen many.

Tossing my two satin finish lids into the ring:

VS satin finish in granite.

Optimo new satin finish in tungsten for comparison.

Art's satin finish has a lovely, subtle and discreet sheen, which I find to be ideal for an everyday hat.

The new Optimo satin finish has more lustre, and in tungsten appears more formal.

I just picked up my first longhair, but the crown need a little reshaping. Is it all right to steam these? I don't want to ruin the finish.

Both beauties. The Optimo in Tungsten is a very sharp looking lid!

Here are my 2 that have longer finishes than the rest. Don't know what you'd call these finishes exactly, but the first is a Dobbs, and 2nd is a wool felt Belfry Murino my wife got for me recently. In this case the wool doesn't bother me at all-- Hats in the Belfry seems to have done a real soft, smooth, shiny finish here.

I think that beaver finish is one of the names for the long haired finishes. Actual fur content may have very little to do with the designation. Beaver Brand has their Grand Beaver which to the best of my knowledge is a 100% hare/rabbit felt. Although I see no reason one could not make a 100% beaver long haired felt, I'd love to see one if anyone knows who's making them.
just my $.02 :)

The traditional European long-hair finish was called "Flamande" for Flemish(Belgian) Hare.

Mayserwegener's Hückels show two distinct Velour types, not all are long-hair and many Satins are not Velours.

I think you are right but I'd like to see what could be done with beaver just for comparison. Personally I like that Anton Peschel Velour the best of what I've seen of your collection but if the Hückel Superior Crystall Velour was a darker color it's would be the all time winner.

edit: RLK, I stand corrected, and the funny thing is that I have that same hat in the same color but it doesn't fit me so I never look at it. I just checked and sure enough, there is the same liner with Pure Canadian Beaver right there in front of me.

I just wish it was in my size. My personal favorites are the Hückel Superior Crystall Velour and Hückel Sigma Velour which is in my size. The old light color Austrian Velours are just about impossible to find in any size.
