The safest state to live

I've seen a number of "Dateline", "20/20" shows where families moved to "safe" places and ended up the subject of the show. Usually involving murders, etc. The "safe place" to me is a joke. Sure, statistically some places are better than others, but there's no safe place to live, per se. Covina John was pretty much on the money above.
Fancier places are better at hiding their crime statistics. I know this from family and friends and when my wife was a commissioner. False security.

The worst thing a person can do is move to a small town and take their safety for granted. Drug crime is rampant in small town America, and you leave your door unlocked at night at your peril. We may not have gang-type drivebys and such things as that, but that's no consolation when someone on your block is the victim of a daylight home invasion perpetrated by some acne-faced oxycontin punk, and you find yourself wondering if you'll be next.

And whatever you do, don't take a job working in a small-town drug store. You might as well wear a sign around your neck saying ROB ME.

You could move to a remote location where there is no crime and die in the first blizzard or get killed by an animal. The important thing is to stay aware and always think about what can happen.

Very true. I live in one of the quaintest little towns around, but it's still far from perfect. I live right in the middle of the downtown block and break-ins were like wildfire here for a few months. Because of my dad's shop, we have a good security system on the building and night vision cameras inside and outside. The Sheriff has been here a few times asking to see our camera footage. We've also been asked by the pharmacy across the street if we'd be kind enough to walk them out at closing time. They were having problems over there.

Even small towns have their problems, but usually the good folks band enough together to at least keep it in check. It'll never be perfect, but I'll take it over city life, myself.

"Toffee-nosed" is a new word to me! It's great!

First time I heard it a guy I'd met in Scotland was telling us about getting a phone call from the president of the Rolls Royce Club in the UK. The guy was a down-to-earth type who'd done well as a builder and had a small collection of vintage Rolls Royces. The club president had called him and had wanted to know why he'd never applied to join the club. His response was "I thought you'd all be a bunch of toffee-noses!" :D

The rural county I live in is the county where the drug company that came up with oxycontin first released it for use. It was originally intended for terminal cancer patients, and the county has one of the highest rates in the US. Fortunately, they've managed to shut down all the pill-mills and have been prosecuting the doctors running them; unfortunately, this has meant a rise in the use of heroin.

I'm currently an alternate on a Grand Jury and am learning a lot about what goes on in our county's small towns! It is an eye opener.

Regards,
Tom

Some of those things are like comparing apples and oranges for safety. Like SD being the 9th safest state due to low ratings of everything... but rape. They had the third highest rape rate in the country:

No. 9: South Dakota
Assault: 46
Burglary: 50
Murder: 33
Motor Vehicle Theft: 48
Rape: 3
Robbery: 48

Yeah, I'd rather live in a state with a higher rate of motor vehicle theft than rape or murder... Plenty of those states have low rates of other crimes but are ranked in the top 25% for sexual assault. That wouldn't make me feel safe.
