The safest state to live

The main thing that keeps me here, other than being born here, is that we're fifty miles from the nearest Starbucks. If you want a small coffee or a large coffee here, you order a "small coffee" or a "large coffee" --none of that dopey "venti" and "grande" foolishness.

Once I was in a Starbucks (which I hate to admit) and the girl working the counter translated what I was saying so I switched to ordering in Italian. She was really confused after that.
Of course the paper cup had more flavor than the coffee.

Fairfield, Connecticut, where the real Pepperidge Farm is.

It's hard to imagine anywhere safer than Pepperidge Farm. No meth or heroin: Milano cookies ... and radio actor Parker Fennelly telling us that "Pepperidge Farm remembers!" Remembers to stay safe, presumably.

If you are going into the fabled safe cities the Willoughby would be the safest.

Well, it depends on who you listen to. Some say New Hampshire and other say Maine. The internet is fickle. :p

I say the same thing about California. It is horrible---don't move here. Hippies this means you. :p You want to move to New York. :p

I'm assuming you mean downstate. Which is totally fine to me. I don't think the hippies could tolerate upstate.

I'm going to guess North Dakota as the safest state. Less people = less crime. But I'm pretty sure I'm wrong. But I bet it is someplace in the midwest.

Welcome to Des Moines folks! Safest city in the Union!

(Please limit your visit to a 3 mile stretch of Fleur Drive, and well-lit areas of Grand and Locust Avenues during the day, weekdays and on the west side of the river, downtown only. Keep all hands and objects inside your vehicle at all times. It is not advised to exit your vehicle. It is not advised to solicit meth dealers, prostitutes, or gang members. If you find yourself in a neighborhood within 3 miles of the downtown area, drive to safety. Des Moines will not be held liable for the destruction of your property, loss of life, or complete dissatisfaction when you realize it is not nearly as quaint, backwater and/or quiet as you expected. Enjoy your brief visit. Make sure to carry insurance.)

I kinda like Starbucks....ever since I discovered a glitch in their system that allows me to get free coffee and tea.

Well, it could be that beautiful area outside of Madison and Milwaukee called Wisconsin, but since them two cities are technically part of my beloved home state, I'm gonna say it ain't Wisconsin, either :p

Is Milwaukee really that bad, Tom? I’ve always thought of it as being kind of like Muskegon, but with more brick warehouses and a brewing industry. I’ve never been, but it’s on my “must see” list.

I suppose there are parts of Muskegon that aren’t too great, but like Flint, Saginaw, Detroit, etcetera, as long as you aren’t being stupid or out looking for trouble (i.e. drugs, prostitutes, etc.), it’s pretty easy to be safe.

Nature wise we’re in good shape here: no earthquakes, hurricanes, or tsunamis, and minimal incidents of tornado, wildfire, Biblical plagues, or the like.

I imagine it's just like any other big city. Just gotta be careful of where you go and what you do. I don't go there often, because I don't feel safe in a lot of places.

East Tennessee has some really nice "small" cities to live in.
If I could move to that end of the state, I would.
Just don't come to the West end of Tennessee, unless you ARE looking for high crime. :)

That's right. Soon the whole United States will be an endlessly quaint street full of toffee-nosed art galleries, overpriced restaurants, and factory outlets selling stuff with American labels that was made in Sri Lanka. Oh you lucky, lucky people.

"Toffee-nosed" is a new word to me! It's great! Sadly, the rest is accurate. You forgot Maine souvenirs made in China.

I have lived in many states and countries. I do not think there is a straightforward answer because there are problems with anywhere.

Locally I have seen an example of a city that was rated among the safest places to live based on crime statististics but the police will not even file reports on vandalism because it hurts the crime statistics. It looks good at first when you look at the overall crime but when you notice the high violent crime in relation to the total it is not as safe as the numbers make it look.

The safest state personally is one of awareness. Be aware of your surroundings, be aware of who and what is around you.
Chances are you don't live in Mayberry.

(I have had a series of discussions where when I would say watch out for people with telltale signs of criminal behavior and others would paint me with the prejudice brush! It all comes down to when you get robbed one day you'll change your value system a bit.)

I've often considered moving to a safer state entirely... our state's capital city has gone from one of the best places to live (crime and cost of living factored together), to one of the least safest in the country...

I agree to watch for problems but you also need to remember that a bad guy can catch you by surprise better if he doesn't look like a bad guy. There is crime in small towns as well.
