I guess it's rather simple:
the western culture was quite feminised. Which started in the 1960s and lead to the extreme with men dressing like women and women dressing like men, with men who try to be good in housewifing and women trying to be tough as men etc.

Now the pendulum swings back the other way, I think.

I heard a theory the other day about societies proclivity in that it is sort of like a rubber band, the choice in fashion stretches out and then reverts. Now this is not to be taken literally, my friend said, but crucial aspects that make a decade memorable sort of resurface in the constant ebb and flow that is this social acceptance.

For "manly" to have any meaning, it must be viewed in contradistinction to "womanly." (We are not after all comparing manliness to "bigness,'' "surliness," "cuteness," "happiness" or any other "-ness" other than those qualities inherent in the dichotomy between men and women).

Wherein lies the historic difference between the sexes? It seems to me that in all probability the activities in which men have engaged more frequently than women are those activities that involve exposure of oneself to immediate physical harm. Typically these activities are performed not from choice but from a sense of obligation to a family, tribe, or larger group, or even a code of conduct.

In other words, Patton was quite probably correct.
