The quality of the sewing thread used by Aero

Hello everyone, I wanted to know if, like me, some of you have noticed a drop in the quality of the sewing thread used by Aero? Indeed, on my last jacket, which is only a few months old, the thread is fraying in many places and some seams have even started to come loose. Do you think I should be worried about the future of my jacket and its durability over time? I thank you very much in advance for your feedback and your expert opinions.

The fact that the "hairs" of the thread stick out a little is also the case with my Aeros, albeit much less. You can see the beginnings of it on my Lewis leathers, but the thread is much thinner and so it will be less. I think this is because the thread is thicker with Aero (just an assumption). But I would never have given it any thought and never noticed it until your post.

You may have already done so but I probably would’ve raised this with Aero Leather first to get their take on it.
Also, given the sheer quantity of jackets Aero Leather produce I would’ve thought that if there was a wider issue with the thread they use it would’ve been more widely reported before now.
As far as I can recall this is the first post I’ve seen questioning the quality of the thread used by Aero, whereas there are quite a number regarding the suitability of some of their zips for heavy leather jackets.

All the same it would still be interesting to know whether the thread now being used has been changed or comes from a different supplier to that previously.

Hi @Alfredodelavega,
I do apologise that i missed your email regarding this, this week, following your facebook post i have now found it in my spam folder and have responded accordingly but will address it here also.

For context the jacket in question that you refer to is an Apprentice / trainee made jacket that you questioned if it was a different quality of thread.

I can assure you that the thread used on your apprentice jacket is exactly the same as used by all our machinists on all our jackets. With our apprentice / trainee jackets whilst we may use some second grade leathers ( maybe with more marks / scars or some miss matching) , and end of line linings etc…. the thread used is standard. I did however explain that due to them being trainee machinists so they are learning not just the art of sewing the jackets but also learning how to tune their machines , getting tension set correctly etc….. learning how to read their stitches to see if machine needs adjustments etc… which can be different for different types / thickness of leather. This can leave stitches sitting slightly more raised than normal, which in turn can mean friction from rubbing can cause a little “whispering” of loose fibres. ( your jacket does appear to have had quite a bit of wear and the whispering is around the cuff, which can rub quite a lot) This is very superficial and can be sorted by running a lighter / flame lightly over the stich line ( keeping flame moving and not too close) this will shrink back / burn off the very fine whispering hairs.

This visible top stitch is a secondary stitch and not the main structural stitch which is inside the jacket out of sight and protected.

I hope this clarifies a little the cause and maybe reassures you that it does not cause any weakness to your jacket. Buying our apprentice jackets is still very good value for money, and the jacket you receive is still a great jacket but just might have a few more quirks than a first grade Aero.

Yes, I had an exchange with them directly. They claim that :"This is very superficial and can be sorted by running a lighter / flame lightly over the stich line ( keeping flame moving and not too close) this will shrink back / burn off the very fine whispering hairs". I am very, very doubtful and knowing that on TFL there are a lot of loyal aero customers like me, I was curious to know if others had encountered this kind of problem. Like you, I have heard a lot about problems related to zippers but I had not yet met customers with the same problems of stitching thread completely fraying, especially on a jacket that is only 6 months old. I remain very worried about the future of my jacket and its seams.

Your jacket as are all Aero's (including apprentice made as yours) is covered by us and if your stitching fails we will fix. In this case is is some surface whispering, not a complete failure, but please do as suggested and the try and use and enjoy your jacket .
Please monitor your jacket and of course if it gets worse or unravels please contact me (direct ) and we will sort.

I had 4 jackets from Aero. I wore them very much in the pouring rain, in the cold and heat. I had no problems with threads.
