Some good bits in the documentary. What I find really telling about the gentleman's journey through the suits is, right after we look at the frock coat he tries on an early English three piece lounge suit, or an accurate reproduction of one. He immediately notices the weight, the thickness and the heaviness of the fabric, and proceeds to comment "I think it's pretty sharp," "I like the feel of this suit and I like the look of it," and again "I like this." He even notes that it's making him stand a bit differently, i.e. better, and I agree that it looks really good on him. You could tell he didn't like the one from Topman at all. I think he hated it. The contrasting experience between those two suits in this documentary really says a lot about vintage style, I think.

^ Interesting.... I have a book on the costumes, but it doesn't mention that. At least it's as accurate as I had thought. Thank you :)

I agree and besides the Frock coat, this was my favorite suit in the documentary. I thought it looked better than any of the others on him.

Yes i caught this program on the BBC when it was aired and thought it was good to get a bit of publicity for the lounge suit and its history. It kindled my interest to find more info on the British suit and I soon discovered Hardy Amies 'The Englishman's Suit' which I could not put down until i'd read it cover to cover. The dust jacket is quite interesting on this book. Fascinating history and development of the British suit.

I was then last week in my local tea shop and the lady who runs the shop mentioned she used to work on Savile Row for a chap called Chester Barrie. She put me onto another book called 'Bespoke' by Richard Anderson. All in all, I've had a massive education since that BBC program on the British suit development.

I've got another clothing book coming. I'll read it first and then take on The Englishman's Suit. And I know why the firm is called Chester Barrie, 'Simon Ackerman' sounds entirely too Jewish for pre-WWII London.

Very interesting video, it's amazing that the suit has gone from being a sign of class and wealth to being an everyman's clothing item to being a sign of class again! Though the Topman suit just made me sad, I don't understand how anyone could look at that as anything other than a simply ill fitting suit. It looks rediculus.

As a side note, I loved the use of Kraftwerk music in the 3rd video lol
