I've been reading this site thoroughly for awhile now and I finally decided to join. Just wanted to thank everyone for the advice/inspiration.

Anyhow. I went to Verizon with my girlfriend this weekend to find her a phone (she needs a Treo for work purposes). While there I saw this amazing phone...

It's the VX8700. It's as thin as the Moto Razr, but made almost entirely of brushed metal! Unlike the Razr which is half plastic. It has a nice weight to it too. Makes you feel like you are holding something of substance. The screen turns into a mirror after 30 second of inactivity. It kinda reminded me of a business card case. I just wish it didn't have the Verizon logo. It's not as bad as the pics make it look... but still would be cleaner without it. Looking at maybe getting it when my contract is up next month

My contract is up this month. Thank goodness I can finally get a new phone! About a year ago my phone was stolen off my desk at work, so I had to resort to using an old phone. The battery can't hold a charge and although it has all its bars of signal, I will often cut out. Grrrrrr

It does have side buttons. From my experience with LG the side buttons do little of anything without opening the phone. Ie: I cannot turn the volume up and down while the phone is closed, nor can I change me "sound profile". I had a freind who had a Razr and he kept getting upset at it because he kept accidently switching it to silent in his pocket via accidental bumping on the side buttons.

Antique stylings vs Cellular phones

Hello all, new to FL. I didn't see this topic being covered yet, but please forgive me if I'm rehashing something I've missed.

I'm finding it more and more necessary to carry a cell phone, but I find nothing ruins the look of a well dressed fella quicker than pulling out a phone.

How do you FL'ers deal with the mix of new tech with old style? Any hints on how to "dandify" your phone?

(Sadly, just leaving it at home is not an option.)

Hello, and welcome to the forum. If you haven't tried the search function yet, you might give it a go and see if this subject hasn't already been covered.

But to take a whack at answering your question, nothing ruins the outline of a suit or sports jacket more than a cell phone on the waist. And so I usually carry it in the "Indy" style shoulder bag that I keep with me most of the time or, when I don't have the bag, I put it in a jacket or trouser pocket. I also have a small monogrammed flapped leather belt holster. It has the look of a small compass pouch, but I use it only when I have absolutely no other carry option.

I'm of the opinion that radio phones are a social blight and no call is that important unless it's an emergency. That is, however, my opinion.

If I had to bite the bullet, I'd get the Samsung P300 or P310. Full functionality without the bulk. Falls into a pocket and disappears, you don't have to think about 'til you need it. If you're going to talk on it and don't want to break the illusion that your vintage attire makes, go someplace private...which one should do anyway, out of courtesy to others, including the person on the other end. Phone booths were constructed for that very reason.

Wow, that is really cool, Wingnut. I thought at first it was a redundant calculator/phone combination that folded open with them being side by side like that. The one with the simple, old school looking buttons is my favourite. I may have to see if I can get one. (As a side note, the old school one doesn't break with a traditional outfit as much since it looks like one of Samsung's old calculators. )

My jacket pocket keeps mine pretty well concealed. If I have no jacket and am wearing jeans, I just bite the bullet and carry it in a front pocket. I have a light zip jacket with a front snap pocket that I keep it in when it gets in the 50s here. I've tried various methods of holsterage, but found them more trouble than they were worth and unsightly at that.

The LG KE820 / KG99 is also a possibility, but as you pointed out Jovan, the P300 could easily be mistaken for a calculator...that's part of the appeal to me. It's not clear what it is until you start using it.

I had the idea to take it a step further and fit it inside of a small cigarette case. Phones really don't have much character to them, and need some personal touch...maybe a modular standard that will fit within a shell that can be heavily customized.

Depending on what type of phone you have you may be able to steampunk the housing. Add a short calliope ring-tone if the whimsy would be acceptable and you have a strange combination that results in technology never was.

I don't know about anyone else, but I use my Pokia Retro Handset with my Motorola Razor:



I get so many compliments and comments when using it. It is definitely a conversation piece and it works great.

While the retro handsets look cool (and I may have to get that WE 302 bluetooth version for use at home), I would think they'd complicate the carry issue while out and about. I mean, where do you stash the handset when you're not using it? Cripes, it's bigger than the phone itself! It seems a lot simpler to just manage hiding the phone when not using it, not to mention a lot lighter.

I also agree with Wingnut when the time comes to actually take a call. Find someplace private to talk so that you don't inflict your side of the conversation on anyone else.

All good suggestions, thanks! And yes, I agree that public cell phone use is rude. While business requires me to carry one, I always make sure to step outside or somewhere quiet to take a call. Common courtesy.

For the record, I carry a Nokia 6275i. Very slim, but not very retro.

I love the steampunking idea, but strangely, can't find any examples of anyone doing such a thing to their cell phone online. MB5, you might have a winning idea on your hands there!

The retro headset from ThinkGeek? Fantastic! But unless you stash the combo in a suitcase, it's not going to be very easy to cart around. Definitely good for the office, though!

I just wonder if it would give you an unsightly bulge under the jacket...
