Same reason I wear shoes. I could walk around bare footed. I used to walk around bare footed all the time, when I was a young'un. I have different shoes for different purposes. I could walk around bare headed, but I wear hats to suit a purpose, protect the old bald noggin. Since I'm going to wear shoes and hats, I might as wear those that I like that also serve the intended function.

No philosophical horsepucky about it.

I grew up in a cold climate and wore hats and caps to keep warm and dry.

Now I wear brimmed hats of various styles because the skin cancer surgeon who patched my face back together said bluntly, "Wear a hat." I started to offer "what if" scenarios involving short solar durations. He looked square at me and repeated, "Wear a hat!"
