You can lose valuable contacts and even friends if you fail to reward their sense of urgency and don't return messages, calls etc. immediately. If you're a Type B personality in a Type A profession or circle, life can literally begin to pass you by unless you learn to share the tension in other people's overscheduled lives.
I think much of the fast pace is self-inflicted. I think a lot of it has to do with choosing to live in a house that's too big and too far from work, working hard to buy a lot of stuff you don't need, and enrolling the kids in a lot of time-consuming activities that require money, commutes and adult supervision. It seems like a lot of this could be pruned back with little or no ill effect.
