Pics for Redhawks2

This is a pic of my Stephen L. Stetson. It is more of a mid brown color than the pic appears and it is marked OPEN ROAD on the band. http://photobucket.com/userinfo/reset/redhawks22/4e86de66108dca9722037800fa0eab7dcf195473

Here are the pics. Last pic shows letters 'OPENROAD' on worn dark sweatband, then you can also see OPENRD on tag with price.

Who Knows Something About Mallory Hats?

I just bought this Mallory OR clone from e-bay. My research tell me that the Mallory Hat Company was purchased by Stetson in 1946, but this hat appears to be much younger than the 'forties. The seller was also auctioning several Stetson ORs, all of which were roughly the same size as the Mallory. The Stetsons appeared to be from the 'sixties or 'seventies and my impression was that all of the seller's hats were from the same large-headed, original owner. My Mallory was sold to me with a yellowish, square, Stetson Box, but I don't know enough about Stetson Boxes to date it, and I'm not sure the box and the hat were original to each other.

So...whatda y'all think?

Well, I found this quote....

Mallory
Owned by the E. A. Mallory Company, Mallory Hats was one of the oldest hat-makers in the United States when the brand was sold to Stetson in 1946.

The Mallory Factory in Danbury, Connecticut, was in production from 1860 until 1969, when it was sold to the Danbury Hat Company which filed for bankruptcy in 1987.

.....in this thread.....

I've also found information that the Mallory brand was discontinued by Stetson in 1965.

Your Mallory does not say "Mallory by Stetson"?
That would give some idea of how old it is, though I'm not
sure exactly when that practice started.

I have a Strat/OR clone by Mallory which I like a lot.
It is made of "Durafelt" and is Premier quality. Does yours
have a quality name? For example, Premier, Aristocrat, etc.

There are a zillion examples of Mallory hats on the site. They
were a major manufacturer. Made some really great hats
in their day.

What do you think of the hat? Let's see it on.

Hi Feltfan and thanks for the reply.

My Mallory has yet to arrive, but I've posted a few photos from the auction. It appears to be a "Mallory" as opposed to a "Mallory by Stetson". Also, it appears to be of "Toring Quality", whatever that means.

When it does arrive, I'll be posting several "noggin' shots". I really can't wait to see what I've bought!

I also suspect it's "Torino Quality." Torino (Turin), as in Italy. The suggestion is that it's right up there with the finest Italian hats (i.e. Borsalino). :)

Thanks for the replies, all. Yep, I agree. Now that I look at the photo, I also think it says "Torino".....especially since "Toring" doesn't appear to be a common noun. Please excuse me for a moment while a feel like an idiot.

As I mentioned, the seller was auctioning five "Open Roadish" hats. The five auctions all ended at the same time. All the hats were size 7 5/8 or size 7 3/4. All appeared to be from the same general era. The other four were Stetsons. One of them was a ten-X Open Road. I don't know how to explain it, but it just had the feel of an estate sale wherein the newly departed had a big mellon and loved Open Roads. It was kinda like the sale I expect Jackie to have when I shove off.

I started to bid on one of the Stetsons, but I already have two Open Roads from the 'sixties or 'seventies, and one from the 'fifties. And I really like the color of the Mallory. I hope it is as it appears in the photos.

I keep fearing it'll happen next time I go away for a week or more...
Better keep training the dog to defend the hats.

Fedora Loungers... Meet the Adam "Lone Star"

Friends... Forgive my lack of recent posts.

I'm safely back in Texas, and I'm learning more about the world of Open Roads and LBJs. I find them at nearly every estate sale I visit. In fact, I picked up a doozy of a Resistol that belonged to a former Dallas Fire Chief. I'll post pics when I get a chance.

In the meantime, I give you the Adam "Lone Star". This is part of my remaining collection. It will eventually be posted for sale at johnnyphi.com. (We're still working out the kinks.)

Adam "Tan Texas" AKA "64 L.B.J.K"

This is a really intersting hat. According to the gold embossed lettering on the dark brown sweatband, it is technically an Adam Premier Quality. This is a very unique hat. The label on the orignal box calls it a "Tan Texas". The lining includes an American eagle, with text that says "The National Heritage Series by Adam". The paper label lists the style as "64 L.B.J.K". The color is listed as "Cascade".

I think this is Adam's attempt to re-create the ultimate LBJ-style hat.

Lee Trail, yes... Lee Corral, no...

Based on my experience with Lee hats, I think the "Trail" was their version of the Open Road, and the "Corral" was their version of the Stratoliner. The Corral and Trail may have similar dimensions, but the Corral's felt is much lighter, and it is unlined.

Another important difference... The Trail came open crown. The Corral was pre-creased.
