The Other Open Roads.....

I did a search, or attempted one, looking for a list of the Open Road style models by the other companies. I know Penney Marathon had lots of styles under that handle. Some may have more than one model that had the OR style, even Stetson's Stratoliner looked ORish to me. Here's my list so far. Please add what you know & post pics if you got them:

Adam Majestic
Champ Ranger
Dobbs Westward
Mallory Dallas
Penney Marathon
Resistol San Antonio
Shudde Bros ???
Stevens ???

Yea, it is a nasty weather day & I ain't got much to do...

Knox Westlite [see old quote below for photos]

A while ago I came into the possesion of a Knox OR clone. Mine is called a Westlite and is of Premier Quality with a wind trolley to boot. I've never seen one mentioned and have only an inkling of its vintage. So brothers of the thin ribbon what can you tell me about this hat? Eric

Even more are mentioned in this thread.

Here are more from Mingo:

I had recently begun posting a new photo array of my dozen or so ORs and OR clones . . . was about half-way through the shoot when everything went funky.

So here is the Reader's Digest condensed version of OR Mania . . .

First . . . a Classic . . . the Stetson OR TwentyFive . . . circa 1960 . . .

Another keeper . . . A Sage Green Stetson OR TwentyFive, circa 1970.

A chocolate brown Stetson OR 3X Royal . . . circa 1955 . . .

A Portis OR clone, in dove grey . . . a recent aquisition from Fellow Lounger, Razzman . . .

portisc195504.jpg

A Knox entry in the OR clone competition . . . The Westlite 20 . . .

Perhaps more Stratoliner clone than OR clone . . . Yet you can not deny that this 1950s Lee Corral is a beauty ;)

Another recent acquisition, and rapidly becoming a favorite . . . An early 50s Dobbs Twenty OR clone . . .

That will do for now . . . but there is more to come, including my #1 all-time favorite, late 40s OR Royal Deluxe . . . an early 40s pre-OR Stetson Sovereign . . . the Akubra CampDraft . . .

Here's a picture of a San Antonio on a San Antonian in Chicago ( and decidedly OUT of his element with regards to the gentle breeze coming off the lake ).

Don't forget that Lee Corral.

I'm guessing that just about every brand of hat made at least one wide brim, thin ribbon. In many cases, you're going to get multiples. Stetson's got at least 10 OR clones (every X designation, Strat, the price designations, the quality designations), Dobbs apparently has at least a few (Mingo's above, and the Westward), and I'm sure the list goes on with many OR clones not bearing any model name.

I would just add that "Majestic" is an Adam quality designation, and not a model. I believe, however, that the Adam Strat/OR clone was designated the "Mainliner."

The Majestic was off a posting on the Bay...
For me, the Stratoliner is an OR style, just shorter brim with an airplane tie in for marketing. If it is an other Stratoliner, then it is an other Open Road...

I've got this one:

LaSalle. No model name. Only reads, "LaSalle Hats - XXXX Quality - Felted by Master Craftsmen" on the sweat band. No inner labels other than size. [huh]

Has the usual OR dimensions and commonly offered silverbelly color. Slightly tricky thin ribbon treatment though.

edit: It reads, "XXXX..."

In light of HPG's LaSalle -- here is a Stetson 3X that, due to the 3-ply ribbon, I tend to think of as my "western" OR:

3X-1.jpg

For gtd's purposes, this probably qualifies as an OR "cousin"...
