I ruined the sweat steaming it, had to have it replaced.

My own conversion creation from a late '50s - early '60s Bradford Western. I scavenged the ribbon and bow work and brim binding from other hats that couldn't be saved , (but I honestly don't know if I should classify it as a Strat clone or an OR clone). Anyway, it's a thin ribbon conversion clone of one of the two.

My current project, a 5X Beaver 20 Bandera version of the OR, courtesy of Suited Cowboy. I would guesstimate that this hat is either late '50s - early '60s (?). Anyway, it's one of the finest felts I ever handled. It's faded with age and a little soiled, (perfect for me as I like a worn and slightly distressed look on older hats like this). Despite that, it's a solid hat and the felt is still smooth and pliable. The hat was a 7 1/8, (but now a 7 1/4), and sports a 5 3/4 open crown with a 2 7/8 brim width. To retain the crown height and brim width, once again, I had to reblock it on a 7 1/4 x 5 3/4 #51 block, (because of its similar proportions to the hat's original block profile). It's off the block and I'll start putting it together today. Except for the original sweat everything that was original to the hat will be reused. When it's finished the hat will have a nice "lived in look" .

Once again, my thanks to Suited Cowboy. I'll have more on this hat when I'm finished.

On the Bandera, the sweat band's in, the crown is creased and looking good, and the brim is flanged. One problem, the brim is way too wide and it looks odd to me with a flange. So now I'm going to have trim the brim down. The brim binding will have to come off and cut to fit the new brim width. That was my original plan but I went ahead left the brim uncut. It's a little set back but it's worth the extra work and time to make it look good.

...on second thought, I reflanged the brim on a #19 brim flange and decided not to trim it. It looks much better. Poor ol' Mark Havens, before he passed away, told me that the #19 flange is the brim style for Stratoliners.

I have the original thin ribbon sewn back on and as soon as I get the bow work sewn on I'll have pics of the hat. I was amazed at the felt quality on this Bandera. You can definitely tell that this vintage felt, which is light years ahead in quality compared to the felt that's out there now.

Here's a sneak peek at what I have so far, except in the "After" pic the ribbon and bow wasn't ironed out and sewn to the hat yet....

Another reworking on my Bandera 5X Beaver 20. I wasn't really happy with the first blocking on the #51 and with the 3' brim, so I took it apart again and went with my RA block and cut the brim down to 2 5/8 and rebound it. Because the hat had faded so much over the years the tannish thin ribbon no longer matched the hat, so I did a ribbon swap on another thin ribbon conversion I did and both hats are better matched with the swap.

In blocking up a size and completely changing out the original block profile you can see the original color of the hat that was under the old ribbon.

Beallcrest 5XXXXX Quality Kingston
Open Road Style - Silverbelly
5 inch crown as shaped with cattleman’s crease
3/8 matching grosgrain ribbon
2 3/4 brim with matching 1/8 binding.

Beallcrest 5X Quality Kingston made for 3 Beall Brothers 3.... known as Bealls today. A real nice feel to the felt... the crown measures 5 inches as shaped nicely in a cattleman’s crease... however the felt is soft and shapes easily. Can’t get a real good idea on age... I was guessing late 50s to 60s. A few marks here and there but otherwise the felt is in nice shape. Now on to who may have made this hat for the Beall Brothers. The only real clues I saw in manufacturing and size tags weren’t too conclusive to me... had me think possibly Stevens or Adam hats. But then I saw this label on the underside of the sweat.... looks quite a bit like one I’ve seen before... on an old OR style hat no less... one made by... Resistol
