The Open Road Guild

On a whim, today I wandered into an antique mall nearby that I have not been to in months. And for a song, I walked out with my first Open Road. It is a 4X.

I am not particularly fond of the cattleman's crown. After a little visit to the stove for some quality time with some steam and voila! Here's what we have:

I suspect that it will be one of my favorites.

Any opinions as to age?

Fairly modern, no earlier than 70's I suspect.

The checked liner looks fairly modern, but photos of the paper label under the sweat is the best thing to use for dating. Nice pick up any way.

Nice find. I believe your Open Road was made in the 1970's, possibly 80's. I had one with the diamond liner that came with the box and receipt. The receipt was dated 1975. It has been my experience, the Open Roads with the diamond liners seem to be the last "soft" Open Roads.

Sorry to crash the thread guys, but since Open Roads and thin ribbons are mainly what I have, thought this would be the better place for me to post my ORs...

This is one of my 3X ORs. I swapped out the Cattleman's crease for a C-crown crease. I like a little tighter pinch on my creases. This one is 4 1/2 inches tall at the pinch, sloping to 4 inches tall to the back. 2 3/4 brim. The best thing I like about ORs and Strats are that they're perfect for casual attire, which is how I like to wear my fedoras....

I have had this for sale for a while but no takers. It's always been one of my favorites so if I don't sale it it won't bother me. Based on the Ops tag that would put it around 50-53. Figured I would just post it on this thread devoted to The Open Road.

I agree with Randall, that is a looker. If I didn't have a fleet of ORs I'd consider it myself.

Pretty pumped winning an auction last night for my first OR, a Stetson 25 on ebay. Made my Christmas! Can't wait til it arrives and I can join the OR Guild and enjoy a hat I've been researching for a few months before venturing into an auction. Hoping I chose wisely.

Thanks, I just saw a 2010 post in the Hatpin thread from another guy with a picture of the same pin coming with a 60s - 70s OR 25, pretty much dates it where i thought it would be. Now comes the hard choice of which bash to put in it. I'd like something in the middle of a western bash and a pinch front fedora. Suggestions, anyone?

I like a center dent with side creases in most of my ORs.

The OR I wear the most has alpine/cattleman crease but I have one in a diamond that gets lots of wear too....

It is totally IMPOSSIBLE to go wrong with the cattleman crease on an Open Road.

I have a boat load of ORs. One more won't hurt me if I can afford it. How much are you asking for it? It's my size too.

Diamond crease is a good choice!
