The answer is simple...most people don't care...

Yes, but why don't the producers care? They spend so much time and effort finding the hatter for each movie, why do they not care that the hat that represents the films on the street is nothing like the real thing? It's not as if a relatively accurate hat can't be supplied cheaply: an Akubra Fed is cheaper than most of the "official" hats, and closer resembles the movie hat. Is it really too much effort to supply a hat that is even close?

For the price of this hat you could buy two Steve Delks - and he's the guy who made the real thing!

Ridiculous.

Supply and demand, capitalism, market forces, whatever label you want to put to it: they'll sell what folks will buy. If the market doesn't care, neither will they. product like that what they're reallyselling is brand image, not the hat itself. [huh] Not ideal, I agree, but that's the way the world works.

Mr Average hasn't a clue what an IJ hat should look like...

Last week while checking my bags in at Boston Airport, I was wearing my fedora (the brown one in the US TRIP pics). Young lad checking my bags, quips, "Your hat....uhhhhhh.....you look like THAT guy...uhhhhhhh....Crocodile Dundee?? or .....uhhhhh.....that Indiana guy!!!":eusa_doh:

I was on my 'run' for dorks that evening. Next one hit five minutes later wearing a Homeland Security uniform. Funny, the effect a good hat will have on some folk [huh] I guess it just bowls them over so much that they go 'all giddy' and just can't think straight ...like they've just fallen in love [huh]

Who knows if they even have a say in the matter? It could be strictly up to Marketing, but even so you'd think the Marketing people would at least try to get it close so as to appeal to those knowledgeable fans most likely to spend that kind of money.

Somehow, I doubt that will be the case much longer.

Five hundred and twenty-five smackers!?

HOLY.....!

I bought a strong-running engine, transmission and rebuilt radiator for my car for $350 in October...imagine what I could have got for $525!

That's it. People are officially on CRACK.

Well said, Edward and fatwoul.
RBH, you're exactly right. In they end, most people have no malice when they call us Indy. I got it the other day from the less-than-well-educated campus police monitor in here. Many think they're simply teasing, but with admiriation. I was wearing a grey Borsalino San Remo, so......

To tell the truth, that's not a bad look. And, did you notice, absolitely no ribbon (or other hatband) on that hat!

I can think of worse things than being called Indiana Jones . . . He is about as cool as any movie icon since Humphrey Bogart . . .
And women love him . . .

I think the annoyance comes from the fact that so many yahoos can't just say, 'Nice hat', 'You look sharp', so forth...so often some silly worn-out movie reference or non sequitur comes out, and the speaker acts as if they're being clever or original. No harm may be meant, but it shows a distinct lack of thoughtfulness or tact to simply suppress the urge to blurt out what they're thinking without really considering it carefully. It really boils down to a lack of tact.

The 'cowboy' one really gets me. Most cowboy hats are distinctly styled and look nothing like a fedora...and most cowboys (or wearers of western wear...if you can't ride, rope, throw, and brand or if you don't do it regularly, you're not a cowboy!) wouldn't be caught dead in a suit and tie or without a pair of proper boots.

It's infuriating to develop your own unique style and have people grab it and run in an absolutely wrong direction with it. I'm not a flesh peddler, I don't think I'm in a movie, I'm not involved in organized crime, I'm just wearing a hat( and possibly a good suit and tie). Don't like it, don't bother me about it. Say something silly about it and expect an equally silly response.

I'll say it again: Next year ALL Fedora wearers will be "Indy". Without exception. You better get to liking it.

I don't think that's universally true. I'd be very surprised if I will get any Indy comments whilst wearing my grey Whippet, for example, but yes, I expect comments when wearing my Fed Dlx or Camptown, and will absolutely deserve comments if I dare to wear my AB out in public around the time the film is released, or for a year after. lol

Accepted, but if 90% of the movie goers also don't care, why do they go to all the trouble to make Dr Jones' hat look right in the films themselves? The reason for that is because it is such a feature of the films - moreso than some of the characters. It's probably one of (if not the) most recognisable piece of movie character apparel. I just think that it shows a certain degree of contempt for the viewer that something so shoddy and inaccurate would be sold under an official licence. There's really no excuse when more accurate hats are quite easily available for less money. If DP or whoever make the "official" hats can't do a good job, give the contract to someone who can.

Right. The fact that Mr Delk makes hats in the first place is indication of the appeal from the more knowledgeable fans. The ones who don't know any better wouldn't care if the hat looked right, and the fans who do know better do care what the hats look like, so surely the default is to try to supply a hat that is more accurate, which doesn't any more to achieve. Then they'd get sales from the know-nothing fans and the hardcore fans alike. Why alienate those Indy geeks?

And what's with the little Indiana Jones badge? Because the hats are so unlike an Indy hat that they need to have a label on them so people will know what they are. Why don't we all do that? Why not just stick labels on things, saying what they are supposed to be, despite not being that thing. I'll go out tomorrow and stick a big label on the front of my house that says "mansion" and another label on the car that reads "Daimler". I'll stick a label on the bath that says "Olympic Swimming Pool".

Of course, I am being devil's advocate. Having complained about all this, I am actually in favour of the official hats being rubbish, precisely because it seperates the geeks from the know-nothings. If getting hold of a good-looking Indy hat was easy, I doubt a lot of people here or COW would bother trying. There is a certain pleasant, smug, self-satisfaction to be had seeing someone wearing an official Indy hat, and thinking to yourself "I have one made by the guy who actually made the movie hats."

Indeed. And that's a good thing, too. When I see someone wearing a new AB, a few months after the film's release, I can think to myself (with the same smugness) "I paid half what you did". :D
