Can of worms opened: when I dress up even slightly I stand out and women seem to appreciate it. More than once I’ve had women, strangers and known, tell me they wished their men would dress better. I occasionally wear ties casually and throw on a sport coat and you’d think I was in white tie by some of the reactions I get.

I might not care for all of the current women’s fashions but at least they are putting out some effort. I remember my daughters getting ready for dates and spending hours choosing clothing and doing makeup and hair. The guys usually just came over in whatever they had on earlier in the day. No, the “men” were not dressing that way because the women liked it. The men were just lazy and slovenly. I hate the excuse that “I’m just a jeans and a tee-shirt guy.” I know it’s really none of my business how others dress, but I lament the societal changes that our dress is indicative of.

I've had a woman tell me that I was too dressed up with my shirt tucked in, a jacket and/or waistcoat (not a suit) and khakis, as the other men in the group favored jeans and untucked contrasting turned-up cuff dress shirts - not my thing.

We were all around 50 y.o. at the time - no spring chickens.

Yes, I realize that this is anecdotal, but the pendulum does swing both ways.

The gent on the right has an interesting chain set-up, one which I've never seen before. Looks like he's sporting either a 3- or 4-pocket vest such that his chain is straddling his upper right vest pocket & the lower left one, seemingly without going through any of the vest's button holes. I suspect that his pocket watch would be in the lower left vest pocket, perhaps there was a pocket knife or some photographic utensil in the upper right vest pocket. I see that he's got what looks like a coffin nail in his left hand so maybe he carried a lighter in the upper vest pocket, secured to the chain so it wouldn't go missing. Anyways an interesting look.

That would bother me, not going through the button hole. I can drop stuff, and I'd hate for my watch to be one of those things.

Good point. Given the proximity of the chain to the bottom button of the vest, he could very well have used a button hole attachment device such as a T-bar, which isn't visible in the photo.

Chain notwithstanding, a big problem with modern vests is that the pockets are often not deep enough. I recently had a balance staff pivot broken when a pocket watch left its shallow pocket &, albeit held by its chain, proceeded to swing into a hard surface with a sickening "whack". After that incident, if the lower vest pockets aren't a good 4 inches deep, I cut off pretty well the entirety of their inner pouches so that the watch hangs all the way down to where the lining & outer material meet. I find that virtually the entire inner pouch should be removed so that the pocket watch doesn't pull it out when viewed.

I've come across some vests in which the pockets were so shallow that a watch would actually be partly visible when placed therein. Not to be used without the foregoing modification as far as I'm concerned.

The top is kind of mounding just a bit so I don't doubt that it is a telescope crease. I just don't believe it was a derby.

Not a derby. Not a boater. It was an early, low profile, telescope soft hat. I had pictures of one I owned in the early 19th century hats thread, but the pics are gone. I'll attach a couple here.
