The ethos I get from all these photos is that in the 30s and 40s when all classes of men wore hats, but especially for the working class, it's like a statement that they are independent contractors out there, in business, with a place in society that deserved recognition. In other words, "don't treat me like a factory drone or galley slave, but like an independent contractor."

"I have a say in what I do, and it's not just up to you, Mr. Employer, to dictate what I do and where I go. I can come and go as I please, and it's to your advantage to deal with me that way." Maybe I over-interpret, but that's the feeling I get seeing those pictures.
