And since he was trying to hang on to & was around members of high society we really don't know how well he was able to hide the gunshot wound he had suffered. I always found it interesting that when he was released from prison he virtually disappeared & his life cannot be traced from there.

In 1884 a group of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians, as well as pupils and faculty from the Carlisle Indian School were invited to Washington DC & the White House. On the trip they also visited the Gettysburg Battlefield. These pics were taken facing northwest at Devil’s Den.

General Nelson Miles was not directly involved in the battle of Wounded Knee but as Commander of the Division of the Missouri was the overseer of the military's efforts against the Lakota resistance.

Buffalo Bill Cody is identified as the scout for Miles on the left edge of the pic.

General Miles was the one who transferred Charles B. Gatewood to the lonely abandoned Dakota territory as depicted in the movie "Dances With Wolves".
