As a younger man Frank was fascinated with Cowboys & Indians, outlaws & lawmen. He started holding an annual BBQ & picnic on his ranch he named Woolaroc just outside Bartlesville, OK. He called his picnic the Cow Thieves & Outlaws Reunion. Lawmen would come & mingle with the outlaws. The rules were that all guns were checked at the door & everyone was granted immunity for the day.

Frank even hired a famous bank robber Henry Wells to work on the ranch. Wells was tried for 34 bank robberies in 4 states but only convicted one time, serving 5 yrs of a 16 yr sentence. When asked once why he got into robbing banks Wells said that he'd try anything once.

Wells was credited in the 1930's with tipping off Frank Phillips of the plan hatched by gangster Pretty Boy Floyd to kidnap Phillips. Wells said that was the only time in his life he ratted out "one of the boys".

Fancy set of bat wings Frank is wearing. Is that your program, HJ?
He probably had those big pockets put on those bat wings so he could carry around some of his money!

Woolaroc is owned by the Phillips Foundation today & houses a museum. The program is on display there. Today the sprawling residence houses the museum & the surrounding ranch land is a nature & wild animal preserve. If you're ever in NE Oklahoma it's worth a visit. Lots of history there.

The Cow Thieves & Outlaw Reunion is still held every yr but its a small social gathering for the benefactors of the Phillips Foundation.

This is the hat Cole Younger was photographed wearing most often after he was allowed to return to Missouri from 2 yrs parole in Minnesota in 1903, & his death in 1916. A remarkable man, he was wounded by gunshot 23 times in his lifetime & still carried 17 mini balls in his body when he died.
