That's a cool looking Schoble. Is that some sort of felt, or is it woven straw? I can't exactly tell what the material is.

It's felt with thread sewn as a spiral decoration. From what I've read here, it was popular for a very brief time in the mid-30's.

Yours and Buler's examples just keep confirming what I've seen: no such thing as an inferior Schoble.

A search of thread titles for 'Schoble' shows that JohnnyPhl sold a ton of the Superiors in '08 - which I had been around for those auctions!

Thanks jtl - I bought that matchbook lot primarily for the Schoble book (pic in first thread). The green color and tall crown in the artwork really reminded me of my own hat. I'm thinking that book is probably '30s vintage.

Here is a pic of the Frank Schoble building:

I think I read somewhere that he died after being run over by a horse and buggy. EDIT: he was struck by an automobile in 1933. The article is on the NY Times page, but you have to purchase it.

And his son, Frank Schoble, Jr. died only 6 months later in June of 1934, at the age of 47, as a result of injuries sustained in World War I. Ah, the paper of record!

And ScottF - that's one _great_ looking hat. It's a style that should definitely come back. Must've been expensive, as I imagine it was done to the felt before the hat was blocked.

Two have been posted - one by Dinerman (see 'pre-1940s Dress hats' thread), and another that I forget who posted. I also found one on ebay France that was too small for me - also from the '30s and made in France - I sent the link to a lounger, but never heard whether or not he bought it. So that makes 4.

There might be a 'Spiral' thread? (I'm too lazy to search)

There's no spiral thread, though there are plenty of threads that go in circles.
Baron Kurtz's Knox Tom n Jerry is the other one I can think of, but the photos are gone.
