Vice is a practice or habit that is considered immoral, depraved, and/or degrading in the associated society. In more minor usage, vice can refer to a fault, a defect, an infirmity, or merely a bad habit. Synomyms for vice include fault, depravity, sin, iniquity, wickedness and corruption. The modern English term that best captures its original meaning is the word vicious, which means "full of vice." In this sense, the word vice comes from the Latin word vitium, meaning "failing or defect". Vice is the opposite of virtue.
Vice is also a generic legal term for criminal offenses involving prostitution, lewdness, lasciviousness, and obscenity. Illegal forms of gambling are also often included as a vice in law enforcement departments that deal with gambling as a crime.

We will deal with just a few that aren't illegal or biblically sinful. Though the good word says to avoid drunkenness, Jesus's first miracle was turning water into wine (John 2: 1 - 11). From what I read...it was fine indeed!

Despite the literal and /or legal definitions of the word, I believe most of us may use it in a more lighthearted or tongue-in-cheek manner, usually referring to drink, smoking, gambling, or whatever. I believe this is the spirit (no pun intended) in which this part of the forum was created. I'm all for keeping it light!

I was always partial to the anecdote attributed to Lincoln on vice/virtue - it exists in a couple of forms as he seems to have used it more than once, but here's the version recorded by a British journalist visiting the White House in 1862 (it mentions Seward, one of my favourite figures from the Civil War era - a man who enjoyed both smoking and drinking - so that's why I'm partial to it):

Some of the party began smoking, and Mr. Seward, who was present, remarked laughingly, 'I have always wondered how any man could ever get to be President of the United States with so few vices. The President, you know, I regret to say, neither drinks nor smokes.' 'That,' answered the President, 'is a doubtful compliment. I recollect once being outside a stage in Illinois, and a man sitting by me offered me a cigar. I told him I had no vices. He said nothing, smoked for some time, and then grunted out, 'It's my experience in life that folks who have got no vices have plaguey few virtues.'

We shall see. On a vicer note, I've been trying some mint Nat Sherman cigarettes of late that I'd suggest, though overall the best I've ever had are Cohiba cigarettes from a friend who smuggled in a case (some of which I was able to test when I was in Chicago).
