The natural soul of a hat wearer and the energy of the past

I have been interested in military and dress hats since I was 2. When I was a toddler I remember watching the collapse of the Soviet Union and Desert Storm on TV with my parents( in a size 4 suit). I remember for me this was a big event so I wore a suit to watch Gorbachev and Schwartzkopf on TV. I then wanted to wear a suit and dress hat every day. When I was in preschool my mom would not let me wear my peewee suit so I would wake up extra early and put on my Grandpas WAY oversized hat, and my little 2 button suit to go eat Lucky Charms. I did not watch black and white movies and none of my parents wore suits or hats. My Grandpa did not wear a suit or hat around me either, so My Parents had no idea where it came from.

Currently, my only vintage items are some of my hats and my 1926 suit so I usually wear modern suits, and modern ties, shoes, and shirts. The hat could be vintage or bespoke. Yet so many people associate my presence with that of the Old World. Yet they never say "that looks vintage, or 20's 30's 40's (apart from the 1926 suit)" I usually try very hard to NOT look like I came out of the Golden Era time machine. I find myself drawn to the identity of a genuine Aura, past or present. The clothes I wear give me an internal tranquility. In fact I usually dress relativity "modern" with a classic brim(my perception).

I tend to view myself as a progressive mentally, politically, socially and in terms of sartorial matters. Yet the perception of my friends and family is I am mix of anachronisms evolving through time from the channeling of energy of the past.

My question to you is, can the energy of the past manipulate the matter(me) of the present? If so is time not linear? Of course I still have free will to act and be anyway I want yet I fee like my identity has been preserved before I could explain what it was.

Basically, you are saying that you started wearing period clothing even though you cannot point to a clear influencing factor. From this, you appear to draw a conclusion that the roots of this behavior must have come from some more mystical source?

Naturally, I'm not arrogant enough to say that we know everything about everything that affects human behavior, but I do know something about human development and education theory (through my studies in psychology and education sciences). From my experience, we all have certain quirks that we develop by ourselves without clear cause-effect string. This, however, does not mean that there are some mysterious forces at work.

Rather, the human mind is above all creative (we are not logical computers) and likely try out and test various things that we encounter in life. We do this the most when we are young children and it seems to me that you saw your grandfather's hat at that age and may merely have developed a liking towards it, like children tend to do. This liking apparently developed into a fascination and became a part of who you are today.

It doesn't need to be more mysterious than that.

Childhood development is one of the most important determining factors of who we are (in addition to our genes). By the age of 30, your personality will be pretty much set and changes very little over the rest of your life.

Metropd I hope this helps you on your existential quest:

“Sell a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man how to fish, you ruin a wonderful business opportunity.” Marx

Edward Gibbon:
I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. I know no way of judging of the future but by the past.

The hat is the pride of man; for he who cannot keep his hat on before kings and emperors is no free man.
ATTRIBUTION: Friedrich Von Schiller (1759–1805)

The hat is not for the street: it will never be democratized. But there are certain houses that one cannot enter without a hat. And one must always wear a hat when lunching with people whom one does not know well. One appears to one’s best advantage.
ATTRIBUTION: Coco Chanel (1883–1971), French couturière.

We are born that way. For some reason, some of us are hat people, just like some are dog people, some are cat people. Same for liking to be "dressed". I am a hat person that is more of the country style = casual attire with thin ribbon hats. Don't over think it, don't fight it, embrace it, be at peace!

As Malvolio stated in a play by Shalespeare:

"Some men are born to wear a hat, some achieve the savoire faire to wear a hat, and some have hats thrust upon them."

Time may well NOT be linear. If you enjoy metaphysical musings, by all means indulge yourself. I feel that any line of inquisitive thought should be followed to its natural end. This makes for an active brain and an interesting person. You may never answer the question, but if it puzzles you for all your days, so much the better mystery.

I don't think the soul knows linear time. A fragrance can call forth the feelings of 30 years ago. Go into a deep meditation and without a clock, it's unclear whether it has lasted minutes or hours.

The symbols we choose aren't random. Symbols can mean different things. They can be literal (you like how the clothes look or fit); they can make our statement (tradition or standing out); or as you suggest, they might mean something deeper (your soul is partly a product of that era).

In psychology, we call those two things "memory" and "sense of time".

We store our memories into our brain, associating them with other similar memories or related memories. Thus, sometimes a fragrance that was important to a specific memory can bring that memory to our minds as fresh as if it happened just yesterday.

And the sense of time is easily disrupted: all you need is to focus on something like a good movie, book, or kiss and time just seems to fly.

None of those situations need a "soul" to work.

Note: I am not disclaiming the existence of souls; I'm just trying to lessen their work burden so that they don't have to be responsible for every little thing... :D

The answer to that must, and cannot but be, a resounding YES.

Perhaps that is a most unfortunate thing; the energy of the past is so binding it not only manipulates but, if such energy be judged a positive thing, DETERMINES the course of history of entire nations.

Without memory of the past, it would be very difficult to build anything at all.
Only very occasionally are matters created "from nothing". Freak accidents, yes.

But I do think it would be exagerrated to pinpoint your affection for hats to your grandfather's wearing a hat when you were a small kid. But you remember that...and it certainly helps. If hats would be associated with someone you experienced as being in any way "evil", I'm willing to bet that you would probably not, today, want to wear a hat (unless the wearing of hats were socially obligatory, in which case you would probably "conform").

Don't take my word for it, though; I might have to eat my hat!

I once dreamt I was a fedora wearing butterfly, flitting and fluttering around, happy with myself and doing as I pleased. I didn't know I was me. Suddenly I woke up and there I was, solid and unmistakable a fedora wearing FLer. But I didn't know if I was the fedora wearing me who had dreamt I was a fedora wearing butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he was me. Between the fedora wearing me and a fedora wearing butterfly there must be some distinction! [huh]

Simply put, each of us is a mini universe with a 5 wheeled slot machine and changing symbols (cherrys, oranges, bars, hats etc.) on the spinning wheels. These symbols change position as we move through our orbit each time our individual universe receives or sends electrical impulses. Catching glimpses of different symbols as they spin by us and recognizing them and what they represent to us as far back as we can consciously remember and also surfacing from the unconscious memory from many spins ago. The impulse from the symbols then integrate into ourselves and into our world of words text pictures sounds and so on. In this way we can communicate to others with pictures, thoughts, words, ideas, using the universal word “time” as a reference- start and stop point of what we reference in our communication with others. The word time is a reference point only to convey messages only
Movement of onself and one’s thoughts bring up pictures from the past, present or future and we take it from there.

If someone else is spinning our wheels through some means then we lose control.
Hope this helps

Now we are talking. Having the courage to be one's self, for the purposes of this forum, is to simply wear a hat. What a statement.

The sense of style exhibited on the lounge is truly beautiful. The expression of style requires the courage to walk among those who choose to current trends, on some level it makes us appear odd. In some cases, we are actually castigated for enjoying and expressing our sense of fashion.

Look at some of Art's creations; exquisite. Read some of the remarks on "Worst Comments Ever..."

To thine own self be true. There is the soul, the energy and the past.;)

well, if you assume ockham's razor, that the simplest solution is likely the correction one, then you were probably just influenced from childhood.

If you take a Christian perspective, you know that people see time differently than God, who doesn't distinguish time in terms of past and present, and it's very well possible that the "past" as we see it is undistinguished from the "present" and so it may be influencing you.

Some theories of psychology posit "collective consciousness," which may implicate that it's possible that other people's memories may be effecting your own, or perhaps memories of a past time could be stored in the "collective consciousness" and you may be influenced by them.

Genetics could also play a role here. It may be possible that there are memories and tendencies integrated into your DNA.

The intricacies of the brain and of human psychology are far from being explained by anyone and we can really only put forth ideas and guesses.

That's just what came to mind after reading your post and the others.
