Douglas was wonderful in Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House as the attorney and close friend of Cary Grant. He won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Hud. He wasn't the quintesential leading man but he had chops.

I have to agree with William Bendix and Broderick Crawford. I'd toss in Claude Rains as well.
