Roswell's being "UFO Central" derives from a factual crash of something 75 or so miles northwest of Roswell on July 4, 1947. The crash was seen/heard by several people. The next day a rancher found debris over an area 300 yeads wide and 3/4 mile long. He reported the debris and this headline was the result.

However, shortly the higher-up brass in the military got involved and what ensued is debated to this day. Some say there was a massive cover up of a UFO landing with an actual alien body found, while the military said, as reflected in this and the next newspaper headlines, the crash was simply a weather baloon and later than any body was a "test dummy."
