Wow psycho sue - I love that style - how did you set it??

Here are some photos (finally) of my unstyled middy.
Like i said its not long enough in the back yet, but it will grow!

I set the bangs (called top hair in the book) as shown in the diagram for forward roll bangs (which is the same for the fluff look actually).
then, I set the sides as shown for the side hair called half wave. The sides of my hair stayed up and back off of my face without pins or hairspray! Isn't that just crazy! LOL those hair settings really work! The back was set with pincurls facing the front of my head and just combed out to fluff.
I did another set yesterday that is the standard fluff over the ears look with the sideswept bangs and it was so fabulous I stopped traffic in the cafeteria! LOL

But I swear, with this cut, no matter how I set it, or how tight or loose the curl.... It SCREAMS vintage!

Hello Ladies. I am not the 'authority' on the middy by any means but I do have lots of research to my credit. haha. I had mine cut into the middy long fairly recently and am currently growing it out since I have a desire to try some long fifties styles. However, this is what the haircut looked cut exactly by the diagram...

I like all those very much Lisa! Mine looks very much like yours. Your layers are 6" right? My bangs were only grown out to 4" so they are shorter. You are right, this cut is very, very versatile and has a lot of bounce. I really think it suits fine hair very well with all the layers. Did you have it cut dry or wet? I think it matters for how your hair will lay when curled. I had mine cut dry and it springs up on it's own without a curl put in.

It was cut dry. Mine has no 'bounce' to it w/out curling because my hair is so straight. But it certainly bounces after being curled.

I love love love my middy too - like you said everything looks vintage with it, it makes it so easy.

I haven't tried that one...i don't really like it. lol

I most certainly do! Yes, it is a huge blue dahlia.

This one is a little messy because it was raining that day. I wear it quite often.

Does anyone know who cuts a good middy in the Los Angeles area??
I went to Frenchy's thinking they would know what I was talking about, but to my surprise, they don't know a whole lot more about vintage hair than other salons. I did my best to explain it and they did their best as well, but it wasn't exactly what I wanted.
I do everything hair-wise myself, but I really like to avoid cutting it myself. That doesn't always end well.

Hi Mame! My friend Maryah Lilly does a wonderful job not only with vintage type cuts but styling as well. http://sweetndandyhair.com/blog/about/ She does work in a salon but she also freelance's and charges a fair price.

I have worked with her many times and can vouch for her work. Just remember to bring in a chart or picture of what you would like.

Oh yes, I too have had the pleasure of working with Maryah and seeing her in action. She is very well educated on the vintage styles and working them to suit the individual. She's done my hair a few times and I've been more than pleased with the results. Along with being a really nice girl, she uses great products.

French bangs with the Middy

So I took pics of the French Bangs done as in Ivan Anderson's book. What do you girls think? It does look cute!

You did a fantastic job! And I'm seriously starting to rethink that style, thanks to you. :eusa_clap Of course, my bangs are too short but I think I might have to see if I can enlist someone to sit for me.

Yay! I was a little put off by them too, but now I do think they are cute, and def vintage. I am growing out Betty Bangs and was able to achieve this. I think it is maybe 4" of bangs at the very front layer? I think they might be fab with an updo also.

Yes indeed, an assymetrical up do! After you fix the front and the curl the back, pull all of the back section over to the side of your bangs. Use side combs to pill the hair up to the same level as your curls in the front, using Bobby Pins to arrange the curls to your liking. OFFset the updo w/ a few creamy colored flowers below the opposite ear. Voila!:eusa_clap

I was just looking through Ivan's book last night and I have to admit that these bangs look very awkward in his illustration so I had not attempted trying them out. They look so wearable on you that I may have to reconsider shunning the set. Kudos!
