I did it again and feeling much better now about my hair. It seems that I can handle my hair so much better when it's shorter. Although I still don't get the waves all right (need more combing practicing as it seems), it's a lot better than before.
(I had shoulder length before, now it's a bit below the chin line)
People keep asking me if I went to the hair dresser and everybody said it looks great

Can someone possibly repost the diagram? I don't see it at the beginning anymore. I found a lady here in Florida that has been working with us when we do our vintage inspired photo shoots. She is new to vintage stying but she is so open to suggestions and learning that I totally trust her with my hair. I want to show her the diagram and will also send her Lisa Freemontstreets tutorial as well.

I just got my middy redone again today. I just had my bangs razored because I'm liking them long and it helps them blend, but everything else is just a longer version of the traditional cut. I have to show you this picture because I totally love my hair right now and this picture is awesome

Thanks Ladies! I am so stoked. I had set my hair yesterday in a hot roller set and didn't even leave them in that long. I woke up today and the curl is still there! I am so glad I had this done!!!

Great cut! I took the diagram to my hairdresser for a middy - ugh! I don't think she grasped the concept as its nothing like my cut I used to have, plus she took a really long time to stare at the diagram and had to refer to it over and over

LOL - I had the same problem. She had to google how to cut hair from a diagram. Then she said she hadn't had to do it since hair school and tried to talk me out of it. So glad she didn't as I love mine. Though she did feather it as she insisted it "look ok" if I wasn't styling it. I wish I had been firm on that as I haven't worn it uncurled since!

I hate it when hairdressers insist on feathering your hair even though you've said (and they should know!) that it's nigh-on impossible to get a smooth set with feathered ends. When this happened to me - not my usual hairdresser - I went back to the salon a week later and got them to blunt-cut the ends, after tearfully brushing out a shaggy mess every morning!

Honestly I have had it with hair dressers. They keep telling me what I should have and don't pay any attention to what I want. I was born with bright orange hair and by the time I was 12 it faded to a mousey brown colour and I just felt "meh" about it. So when I was 16 I decided to dye it red again, but nervous to do it on my own I went to a salon...only to let them talk me into a very slight red-brown. I spent the next 12 years trying to find a hair dresser that wasn't afraid to dye it really red, gave up and learnt to do it myself. I think when I need it cut again I am going to try the beauty school in the city. See if they can follow a diagram.

From my experience, going to an expensive or stylish salon does not necessarily guarantee a better job done! My hairdresser is a lovely lady who comes to my house, charges me a fraction of the price that most salons would, and is happy to go with what I want even when it's something she's not familiar with- case in point: from her client base I don't imagine she spends a lot of time doing crazy cuts, colors et cetera, but the first time I asked her to do U-shaped Bettie bangs she cut them *perfectly*, despite having never done anything like that before. She does a perfect middy cut every time and understands exactly what it is and why I would want it. She also did a great job on my perm (and I never got the 'why on earth would you want that? talk, either). Bear in mind that the aforementioned posh salon refused to cut Bettie bangs and were incredibly hesitant about a perm they wanted to charge me $100+ for...!

Thankfully it was only a temporary situation, but I'm dreading the time when I have to move away and can no longer benefit from my wonderful hairdresser!

With regards to the cutting diagram, have you tried describing the middy cut, rather than trying to explain the diagram? I understand if you want it exactly historically accurate, cut exactly to the diagram, but if that's not a concern, might it be easier to try and describe the cut itself?

Sounds like you have a gem of a hair dresser! They ended up doing the middy cut fine (besides the feathering) after much googling (and me showing them the lisa freemont st video on middys) but they made such a ho-ha over it (and I paid through the nose for a senior stylist who needed the help of the trainee to figure out the diagram) I won't be going back.

My hairdresser who would leave coloring up to me but would cut my hair perfectly was great but moved. Then my back up HD retired. So now I'm down to one who I'm not going back to, plus her snooty apprentice- but she is a whole other story!

Now I'm hairdresser less completely!

I handed her the diagram & scissors & she literally took out a ruler! My middy turned out perfect. She's even helped me with pin curls & rag rollers when I need another set of hands.

I never learned how to cut from a diagram, sorry! but I can really work okay with a good description, but my own colegas seem to find that difficult somethimes also.
So I just keep bugging them where to cut of the hairs.
Somethimes it helpes when you take a picture of a finished hairdo, I work wonders with those descriptions
