The stitching on the ribbon is called a basting stitch and was used to keep the ribbon in place during shipping from the factory as multiple hats were often piled over each other in bulk and shipped in large boxes. The hat retailer was supposed to remove the stitching before selling it. More than likely your hat was never sold judging by it's condition. Congrats

Wow! That is some great historical fodder for me to justify my addiction. I'll leave it on the ribbon for a while to tell this story. Thanks, boy I'm glad I found this place!

Hey everyone!
I've wanted a brown 'burg for a while now, so the other day I decided to finally pull the trigger on this one that has sat in my Etsy faves list for a couple of months. It arrived today. Very clean, no off smells. Popped right out to open crown with no steam or moisture needed, with very little of a ghost bash, and creased nicely into a center dent dry.

Crown 5 1/2" as creased, brim 2 3/8" front and back, 2" on the sides(with curl).
The felt is very nice and soft, medium weight. The sweatband, while soft, most likely will need replacing at some point as the stitching is fragile. A small section of stitches gave way as I looked under the band for more tags and stickers.:( Good thing I know who makes a good sweatband!
My guess as to age is late 40's to early 50's, as it has a cloth tag but the 1817 liner logo. Will wear it tomorrow if the rain stops. I'm sure the rich brown will show better in the sun.
