Two Mallory postcards...

Thank you, Josh, for posting these great pieces of Mallory ephemera. I saw the first of these postcards a while back on eBay. Very interesting, I thought, being ostensibly an advertisement featuring an advertisement, and with what looks to be a pre-printed form letter made for Mallory retailers.

Last for tonight is this brown Aristocrat quality with lots of brim.

brim = 2 3/4
ribbon = 1 7/16
sweat = 1 15/16
crown = 5

The kicker is that I know exactly where that is... I was a carpet cutter in that area!

New find for golfing: Mallory - Sam Snead "The Wedge" (1961? from ads) chocolate brown, stingy 1 5/8" brim, 5 " crown, near mint, sweatband and lining perfect, original price tag $11.95. Quickly found a place among my favorites!

Hi fellow loungers - just obtained this dark chocolate brown Mallory Ten. The seller believed it to be 1930s or '40s vintage, but would I be right to assume it's actually from, say, the 1950s?
Crown = approx 5 1/4" uncreased
Brim = 2 1/4" underwelt
Ribbon width = 2"
Sweatband width = 2". The band is also stamped with "Fred's Hat Shop. South Salina, 138. Syracuse, N.Y."
There's a union tag (photo not shown) under the yellow inner lining, which says 1817 instead of 1823
Size 7 US, cardboard tag (which broke off shortly after unpacking)

What impresses me most about the hat is the silky smooth, butter-soft texture and clay-like malleability of the felt. This hat would easily accept a new crease every day.
This couldn't possibly be beaver felt, surely? (I have no idea what beaver felt is meant to look or feel like)

Here's my addition to the Mile... It's a 7 1/8 has a 1 3/8" ribbon, 2.5" overwelt brim and (unless I measured wrong) a 5 1/4" open crown. Oh and the wind trolly is intact!

From what I can be seen, she's never been worn.

Any idea as to the date?

The next big question... to crease or not to crease??? That is the question!

while not the pristine example above (super nice BTW, Rats) I have my own dating mystery for you guys. If it had a black liner and black sweat, it would be post Stetson Mallory, but what do you make of this? The hat has a paper size tag (loose, tucked in sweat, but matches size label under sweat) and a union shield tag. There were some crumbles of super thin acetate/yellowed plastic material under the sweat. I believe the logo was screened onto plastic (now completely gone), and what logo is left on the crown of the liner is a transfer from that. The year in the crest is 1817 (I believe they used two different years in the crest) if that helps.

Great hat, but the answer is: crease. I don't see much reason to have a hat you don't wear.

Rats, its post Stetson acquisition. It has the 1817 date on the liner. But its still at the transition because of the older style cloth size tag. The assumption is there were still cloth tags to use up until the switch to the paper tags.

Paper size tag and 1817 are 50's or newer.

Also thanks for the advice SteveAs. That's actually kind of what I was thinking. And though I would love to collect some just to have, I feel bad not to get some wear out of them.... maybe that's one that I'll get stretched to 7 1/4 and decide...

I think it's a little lighter weight felt than some I have, so I have been assuming this was intended to be something of a warm weather felt. Not quite a thin felt unlined full lightweight, but maybe something in between.
